'This Old House' Featuring a Point Boro House and Others

PBS show about renovating and elevating Sandy-flooded homes

  An eight-episode series of 'This Old House' focuses on several local homes rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy. The PBS' show will first air in October. PBS announced the show worked on an 1880s cottage in Bay Head, a 1950s Colonial in Point Pleasant, and a prefabricated new house in Manasquan. Side stories will also feature restoration projects in Mantoloking, Long Beach Island, and Ocean Grove and other local projects along the beach and the bay. Point Boro Residents Frustrated at FEMA Meeting

NJ Natural Gas offering higher rebates to Sandy-flooded residents

  It was bad enough that Superstorm Sandy flooded Jim Reilly's Point Borough home, forcing him and his wife to live elsewhere. But then came FEMA's flood maps, putting his house in the flood zone with the toughest building restrictions, with pressure on the towns and the state to accept them. "It's blackmail," Reilly said, outside a FEMA meeting at Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School in Point Borough on Wednesday night. "I'm appalled that the town and the state adopted the flood maps and it's because they were being blackmailed by FEMA, because FEMA said, 'Adopt this or we won't give you money.' Elevation 101: Free Seminar in Point Beach Sat.

Methods and equipment used in raising houses will be discussed

  A free seminar on how homes are elevated and what types of equipment are used will be held at 1:30 Sat. at Point Beach High School's gymnasium. The educational program will be offered by Roderick "Rod" Scott from L & R Resources based in Mandeville, Louisiana. Scott is a Hazard Mitigation Specialist and a Historic Resource Specialist, according to a notice issued by Point Beach Business Administrator Christine Riehl. Scott, in the story, is saying he cannot give an estimated range for total job. That's because the answer varies widely depending on type, size and design of house, method of elevation, who has planned the work and who is doing the work, among other factors.
