Revised plan includes part of District 3, but plan in effect only from 12:30 to 4 a.m. this summer
A parking plan to include part of Point Beach's District 3 is likely to be adopted by a narrow majority of Point Beach Council members on March 5. On Tuesday night, Council members Stephen Reid and Andy Cortes voted against the proposed plan, Council member William Mayer abstained and Council members Kristine Tooker, Bret Gordon and Michael Corbally voted for it, giving it barely enough support to move towards second reading and adoption next month. The proposed parking plan would be in effect in most of District 4 and part of District 3 for those who are not residents or property owners from May 15 through Sept. 15. There will be a maximum fine of $250 for violations, according to the ordinance posted on the municipal website. The …

Extra enforcement started Friday as part of national campaign
Law enforcement officers from Point Pleasant are cracking down on drunk drivers as part of the summer 2012 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Borough police are using grant money allocated through this campaign to add to the drunk driving enforcement they do all year. The extra enforcement began on Friday and continues through September 3rd and includes local and state law enforcement officers conducting sobriety checkpoints, looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated. A concentrated national effort, the campaign helps to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high-visibility enforcement and public education tools, including posters, banners and mobile video display signs. Launched …

Also: District 4 parking fines not being collected yet
Frank Gualtieri isn't happy about getting a District 4 parking plan ticket. But he never would have come to a Point Beach Council meeting to complain if it didn't require a court appearance. "It was an honest mistake, I didn't know about the parking plan," he told the mayor and council at Tuesday night's meeting at Borough Hall. "I don't have a problem paying it, but I oppose a mandatory court appearance for this. It's a parking ticket!" "You were talking before about negative publicity," Gualtieri told them. "This is why some of it exists." Gualtieri, a former Beach resident who now lives in Brick, is one of many residents and visitors who have started noticing that their District 4 parking tickets have the box checked off for a …

District 4 parking plan warnings start Friday; ticketing starts June 22
District 4 businesses will get parking placards for employees so they are exempt from the District 4 parking plan restrictions that go into effect on June 22. The placards for employees will have the name and address of the businesses they work for, but not the names or addresses of individual employees, so the placards can be shared among employees, said Municipal Clerk Maryann Ellsworth on Wednesday. That was one of several revisions to the new District 4 parking plan that was adopted, as an ordinance, by Point Beach Council at Borough Hall on Tuesday night. Councilmembers Stephen Reid and William Mayer, who have always been against the parking plan, voted against the ordinance, while it was supported by councilmembers Kristine Tooker, …

Lawsuit follows one filed by boardwalk businesses against District 4 parking plan
The new District 4 Parking plan is unlawful because it reduces public access to the ocean and Manasquan River and discriminates between Point Beach residents and others, according to a lawsuit filed by several charter fishing boats, a marina and several Point Beach residents. Because the plan allows only residents and local taxpayers to park in District 4's metered spots between midnight and 6 a.m., it violates the Public Trust Doctrine, an underpinning of beach access laws that says members of the public should all have equal access to the waterways and beaches, regardless of where they live, according to a lawsuit filed by John J. Jackson III, an attorney with the law firm of King, Kitrick and Jackson, LLC, 635 Duquesne Blvd., Brick (…

Extra enforcement of mandate to wear seat belts in rear and front seats
"Click It or Ticket" starts now, meaning buckle up or be at greater risk of getting a ticket - not to mention getting injured in an accident. Point Borough is one of nearly 150 law enforcement agencies throughout the state that received a grant for extra seat belt enforcement, which starts today and continues through June 3. Point Borough, like most of the other police departments, received $4,000 to run the seatbelt enforcement checkpoints and saturation patrols, according to a prepared statement from the state Attorney General's office. Point Beach did not receive the grant this year, but will still be enforcing the seat belt law as part of their standard enforcement. The period of time for the extra enforcement includes Memorial Day …
