A man who lives on Osprey Court in Point Borough injured himself and was bleeding when he was transported by Monoc helicopter to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune on Monday, police said. The man had tried to kill himself, but Monoc paramedics, the Point Boro First Aid Squad, Point Borough Fire Department and police responded to the scene and it was believed he was going to survive, said Point Borough Police Chief Larry Williams late Monday afternoon. The man was transported to Beaver Dam Park on Burnt Tavern Road, where the  Monoc helicopter landed and transported him to the hospital. what the hell is your problem David?! Get a heart. How dare you say that. That was so rude and selffish. You don't know how much pain someone would haw to go through mentally to want to end their life. You know their name not their story. You have no idea what they have been through and you can judge them for that. You should be happy he survived and they found him In time. It was Gods way of …   more ›

Fire Department Elects Shrewsberry as New Chief

Mulligan steps down after serving as chief for 12 years

James Shrewsberry, who has served as a lieutenant, captain, chief engineer and deputy chief of the Point Borough Fire Department, has been elected as department fire chief. Daniel Mulligan, who has been chief for 12 years, decided not to run for reelection, but will continue to serve as a member of the volunteer department. Shrewsberry, who has owned property in Point Borough for 20 years and lived in the Borough full-time for 10 years, said his primary goal is to continue carrying out the goals and objectives pursued by Mulligan. "He's a hard act to follow," said Shrewsberry, who has been a volunteer in the department for seven years. "He's a good leader. He knows the job and he's very good at it." Shrewsberry is an officer in the …

Point Boro Fire Dept. Gets $1,300 From Fundraiser

Proceeds are from Rock-N-Relief fundraiser that was held Sat. night

The volunteer Point Borough Fire Department on Tuesday night received $1,379 from the Rock-N-Relief fundraiser that was held Saturday night at the Idle Hour. And not a moment too soon. The money might be needed fast to fix a hole in the roof of the firehouse on Beaver Dam Road. "This wasn't like this before this rain," said Fire Department President James Van Demark, smiling a bit and looking up at a hole in the roof, moments before accepting the check. Van Demark, Borough Fire Chief Daniel Mulligan, Deputy Chief Charlie Willever and Captain Bill Knecht were at the firehouse Tuesday night to accept a giant novelty check, along with the real one, from Mark Sroka and Fred Capolongo, Co-Founders and Managing Partners of Rock-N-Relief. A structure fire at a Washington Avenue residence in Point Pleasant Beach this morning remains under investigation at this time, according to authorities. Sgt. William Ippolito of the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department commented that the blaze at 219 Washington Avenue, which began just after 4 a.m. today, was a roof and/or attic fire. “There were no injuries reported,” said Ippolito. Emergency communications stated that the fire was quickly brought under control, at about 4:30 a.m. Ippolito added that the Ocean County Fire Marshal’s office responded to the fire, and placed the blaze under investigation. Letters to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Point Beach Police Chief Thanks Community

Kevin O'Hara thanks staff, volunteers and "neighbors helping neighbors"

An Open Letter of Thanks to All Who Helped During Hurricane Sandy As I sit here writing this letter it has been three weeks to the day that “Sandy” impacted all of our lives.  Thanksgiving is now only a few days away, when “Sandy” came we were waiting for Halloween’s arrival.  In one sense it seems like only yesterday that “Sandy” was beating on our door step and in another it seems like months ago. The past three and a half weeks or so seem like a blur, like a bad dream.  It is impossible to convey in words my true feelings of thanks to all those who pitched in during such a trying time, so many who stood tall in the face of adversity and did all they could to try to make all of our lives move forward as smoothly as possible.  I’ll try…

WED. UPDATE: Boat Had Mechanical Failure Before Hitting Jetty

No injuries when Ocean One Hit Point Beach Jetty at Manasquan Inlet

The Ocean One commercial fishing vessel had a mechanical failure that caused loss of power that led it to collide into the rock jetty on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the Manasquan Inlet, the Coast Guard said on Wednesday afternoon. The scallop boat was coming back into the inlet when it lost power and the shoal that has developed along the jetty since Sandy had nothing to do with the incident, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Dan Wishnoff. Three people were safely rescued from a commercial scalloping vessel that drifted onto the rock jetty on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the Manasquan Inlet on Tuesday night, according to the Coast Guard. There were no injuries among the three, whose names were not yet available, said Joseph Hartline…

STORM: Snow Brings New Outages For Some

Others have had no power at all for 10 days

Gov. Christie told a gathering on Long Beach Island on Wednesday that the coming Nor'easter and anticipated snowfall would likely cause "a setback" in the work underway for full power restoration. Boy, he wasn't kidding. JCP&L, on its website, is acknowledging that the nor'easter has created new outages, often for customers who were hit with outages in the height of Sandy's destructive path, had power restored and are now in the cold darkness yet again. "Late Wednesday, heavy, wet snow and high winds from the nor'easter resulted in approximately 120,000 additional power outages in the Jersey Central Power & Light service territory," says the JCP&L website. The company serves 13 counties in New Jersey, including Monmouth and Ocean. There …

Turn Off Breakers If You Have No Power

Point Borough Emergency Management issues warning

Anyone without power in their home or business should shut off the circuit breakers so a fire doesn't start when power comes back on, according to Point Pleasant Borough Office of Emergency Management. Shutting off breakers prevents a surge when power is restored and it's the surge that can start a fire, said Kiel Arnone, Deputy Coordinator of the Borough Office of Emergency Management. Arnone said the Ocean County Fire Marshal's Office approved this message to be released to the public. A related concern was expressed this morning by Borough Mayor William Schroeder who wrote on his Facebook wall: "Emergency Management and the National Guard are knocking on doors warning of fire hazard due to power coming back on with water still in crawl …

Boro First Aid: Get Supplies and Plans Ready for Sandy

The volunteer squad suggests that families get emergency supplies and disaster plans ready

While it's too early to tell exactly how Tropical Storm Sandy will impact the Jersey Shore, it's always a good idea to get ready. That's the reminder the Point Boro First Aid Squad has posted on its Facebook page, with a link to the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management website page that has forecasts on Sandy, preparedness information specific to each county, and a "survival guide" that can be downloaded as a PDF. The all-volunteer squad also has Point Pleasant Emergency Management contact information posted on its website. As of Thursday morning, the forecast predicts that on Sunday "tropical storm conditions are likely" and there is a 70 percent chance of rain, according to the forecast for the Point Pleasant zip code at weather.com…

Point Beach Workers Save 3 Trapped in Inlet Rocks Thurs. Night

Police, fire and first aid work together to save a woman, a man and a boy

Point Beach police, fire and first aid responders worked in the cold, rising tide of the Manasquan Inlet waters Thursday night to save a woman and a boy who had tried to save her himself. Maureen Bush, 29, Manchester, fell between sharp, craggy rocks into the inlet water, and Daniel Reinhardt, 16, who had tried to save her, are both OK after being rescued by the emergency responders, said Police Detective Clint Daniel. "The 16-year-old boy was fantastic and should be commended," Daniel said at police headquarters Thursday night. "He tried to get her out, but it was just too slippery. Everyone worked together and did a great job." Daniel said the incident should be a wake-up call to everyone to never go on the inlet rocks, which are …
