NJ Natural Gas offering higher rebates to Sandy-flooded residents
It was bad enough that Superstorm Sandy flooded Jim Reilly's Point Borough home, forcing him and his wife to live elsewhere. But then came FEMA's flood maps, putting his house in the flood zone with the toughest building restrictions, with pressure on the towns and the state to accept them. "It's blackmail," Reilly said, outside a FEMA meeting at Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School in Point Borough on Wednesday night. "I'm appalled that the town and the state adopted the flood maps and it's because they were being blackmailed by FEMA, because FEMA said, 'Adopt this or we won't give you money.' Still at Nellie F. Bennett, but in gym
The FEMA meeting scheduled for Wednesday in the all-purpose room at Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School has been moved to the gymnasium to accommodate all interested attendees, says a notice from Borough Hall. The meeting is still scheduled to take place between 6 and 9 p.m. at the school on Riviera Parkway in Point Pleasant Borough. The slight change in location was provided by Borough Hall to Patch late Monday afternoon. The meeting will be open to all residents, there will be an open forum and a question and answer period with FEMA representatives, according to Borough officials.

Meeting will be at Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School
FEMA officials will hold a meeting for Point Borough residents from 6 to 9 p.m. March 20 at the Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School multi-purpose room. The meeting at the school on Riviera Parkway will be open to all residents, there will be an open forum and a question and answer period with FEMA representatives, according to a notice issued on Wednesday afternoon by the Point Borough Business Administrator's office. The details of the meeting were just finalized today, according to the notice.

NJ Department of Environmental Protection holds public hearing in Long Branch
A huge crowd came to Long Branch City Hall for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) public hearing to protest the potential adoption of FEMA's advisory base flood elevation (ABFE) maps as the new elevation standard for the the state. The crowd on Thursday night was mostly comprised of many unhappy homeowners from around the state impacted by Hurricane Sandy. "The thought of increasing flood insurance premiums into the tens of thousands of dollars is daunting," Toms River resident Margaret Quinn said. Quinn, who lives in the Silverton section of Toms River, said her house was more than 50 percent damaged. Applications must go to town which submits to Ocean County
Any Sandy-flooded residents in Point Beach who want to apply for a Hazard Mitigation Grant have to submit applications by Friday. The funding is to help residents afford the cost of elevating their homes to heights called for in the Advisory Base Flood Elevation maps issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in December, said Lori Thompson, grants manager at T & M Associates, the town's engineering firm, at Tuesday night's Point Beach Council meeting. Friday is the deadline for residents and property owners in Point Beach to submit their applications to Thompson, who is accepting them for the town. The town then has a March 22 deadline to submit them to Ocean County. The county will submit applications to the state Office …

Those in low-lying areas may want to evacuate, Boro says
Point Borough residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to move their cars to higher ground and think about evacuating voluntarily, says the Borough Office of Emergency Management. The Borough is asking residents "to prepare, not panic. Those in areas prone to tidal flooding should take steps to protect themselves and their property including, but not limited to, moving cars to higher ground and voluntarily evacuating until the storm has passed," said Kiel Arnone, Borough Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator, on behalf of Borough Emergency Management Coordinator Gary Colberg. The National Weather Service now has a Coastal Flood Watch in effect for the Jersey Shore area from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Other schools confirm receiving money from Jan. 19 fundraiser
Another fundraiser for local schools impacted by Superstorm Sandy will be held at Martell's on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk tonight. Stephanie Salardino, who has been planning and coordinating fundraisers for months, and Shore 2 Recover, are partnering to sponsor tonight's fundraiser from 5 p.m. to midnight at Martell's. The admission fee of $25, for non-stop live music and complimentary dinner buffet, will be donated as follows: $20 to Hugh J. Boyd Elementary School in Seaside Heights and Memorial School in Union Beach and $5 to Shore2Recover’s rebuild program. The group hopes a new space will accommodate its large numbers
After its last meeting was shut down by Toms River police due to overcrowding, the grassroots organization Stop FEMA Now has found a new meeting place in a location organizers hope can accommodate the group's growing numbers. The next Stop FEMA Now meeting is planned for Sat., March 9, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Silverton First Aid Squad at 86 Main St. in Toms River. The venue, which is significantly larger than the group's previous meeting location, a sub shop in a strip mall, should be large enough to handle the anticipated crowd of more than 100 people.
