Local restaurants are again joining forces to provide a free, hot dinner for those impacted by Sandy, or otherwise needy. The Christmas dinner, which will be served at the Elks Lodge on Arnold Avenue in Point Pleasant from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, was arranged by Stephanie Salardino, who planned the free Thanksgiving dinner held at the Elks the night before Thanksgiving. Participating restaurants are: 709 Point Beach; Hoffman's Ice Cream; Martell's Sea Breeze and Tiki Bar; Spano's; Surf Taco; The Beanery; …

Bill Allowing Free Beach Access for Military Families Signed Into Law

Christie signs bill amending beach tag law, but local communities must give their own OKs

With local permission, members of the military and their spouses and children may now access New Jersey beaches for free or at a reduced price. Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday signed into law a bill sponsored by a group of Ocean County legislators that amends a state law on the books since 1955 that allows municipalities to except certain groups of people from having to pay to access beaches. Previously, the state law allowed individual towns to let persons older than 65 or younger than 12, and those with certain disabilities, to receive beach badge discounts or free access to paid beaches. States with fishing licenses use their licensing regimes as …

I am glad people who enjoy fishing won't have to pay to do so. It seems like you have to pay for everything that is remotely enjoyable here in NJ. For example, you must pay to be near most bodies of water, be it the ocean, an inlet, a river, or a pool. Next thing you know we will be charged a fee for letting our kids run through the sprinklers.   more ›
