Beach Sweeps collects garbage and more in Boro and Beach
A message in a bottle, a plastic bottle filled with sand, a flip flop, building materials, dog poop and lots of plastic were among the items found on the sand in Point Beach and Point Borough on Saturday. Skyler Kummer, 8, a Point Borough resident, found a message in a bottle during the Saturday morning Beach Sweeps at Maxson Avenue beach in the Borough. The message was sent on Oct. 9, 2012 by Robert Peters from a Spring Lake beach. Skyler notified Peters of the find and he said he had been hoping it would be found in South Africa rather than so close to home. "Skyler is very happy with her find," said Beth Degen, her mother. The message said: "This message was sent from the beach in Spring lake, NJ. Date sent: 10-9-12. Mail back with …

Dec. 9 is deadline to put storm-related debris at curb
Home renovation debris should not be put at the curb because the town will not be reimbursed by FEMA for disposing of that type of refuse, according to Point Beach officials. "Notification received from DEP (state Department of Environmental Protection) states that non-storm related waste, such as home renovation scraps and materials, is not considered 'debris' and therefore is not eligible for FEMA reimbursement," says a prepared statement from Point Beach Business Administrator Christine Riehl. "In order to recoup maximum dollars for all our residents, it is very important that you do not place these materials out to the curb for collection." Residents have to get dumpsters for home repair and renovation trash, Riehl said. Dec. 9 …

Another summer has come and gone, filled with days of laughter, sunshine and relaxation at the beach. While the parties have gone, the reminders of them -- caps from water bottles and soda, straws from drinks, and hundreds of other bits of debris -- remain behind. This Saturday, hundreds of volunteers will be hitting the state's beaches from Sandy Hook to Cape May to pick up plastics, Styrofoam, cans and much more, left behind by humans and the tides, as part of Clean Ocean Action's fall Beach Sweeps event. In the Point area, the Sweeps will be done at four sites: Point Pleasant Beach: Jenkinson's Aquarium on the Boardwalk and the Maryland Avenue beach on the south end next to Bay Head In Point Pleasant Borough: Maxson Avenue and River …

Police have identified resident who dumped pesticides and chemicals into trash can
The Point Pleasant Borough Recycling Center will be closed until Friday morning as police continue to investigate the dumping of pesticides and chemicals into household trash, police said. The recycling center became the scene of a HAZMAT clean-up operation after two sanitation workers became sickened just after picking up trash at Curtis Avenue and Cedar Street Thursday morning. The two workers were treated by the Point Boro First Aid Squad and released and did not need hospitalization, Fire Chief Daniel Mulligan had said at the scene. The workers for Roselli, the private sanitation company that picks up the Borough's trash, alerted public works after they became ill. Public works contacted the police department, which called in the …

Past practice of twice-weekly summer pick-up ended with last contract
Point Borough residents are reminded that trash will be picked up weekly during the summer, according to the terms of a new contract. While past practice was to pick up trash twice weekly during the summer, the new contract, signed in December with the same contractor, calls for weekly collection to save money. The reminder, as well as information about trash collection holidays and when trash is collected those weeks, is on the Department of Public Works page of the Borough web site. The recycling schedule remains the same all year.

State DEP announces awards to counties and municipalities
Point Borough is receiving $31,774 and Point Beach is receiving $11,508 in state Clean Communities grants. The state Department of Environmental Protection has announced the award of nearly $16 million in Clean Communities grants to help municipalities and counties fund litter cleanup efforts that help beautify New Jersey’s communities and roadsides, according to a prepared statement from the state. “Cleaning up litter protects our natural resources, improves our quality of life and builds a strong sense of pride in our communities,” said DEP Commissioner Bob Martin. “With these grants, our municipalities and counties will be able to carry out important programs that remove litter and graffiti from our neighborhoods and highways, making …

A tie Borough Council vote not enough to authorize borrowing money for robo-cans
A potential deal for Point Borough to hire Brick to pick up trash and recycling is likely trashed, since the borough voted Tuesday night against a measure to borrow money for robo-cans that Brick needs to do the job. Democrats have said hiring Brick will save about $1.6 million in annual trash and recycling collection costs over a five-year period, while Republicans said the borough shouldn't move any closer to doing business with Brick until they know how much private haulers will charge for the service. A 3 to 3 partisan Borough Council vote to possibly borrow $840,000 over five years for robo-cans was one vote shy of the four council votes needed for a "super majority" needed to pass a bond ordinance. The $840,000 would also pay for …
