NJ Natural Gas offering higher rebates to Sandy-flooded residents
It was bad enough that Superstorm Sandy flooded Jim Reilly's Point Borough home, forcing him and his wife to live elsewhere. But then came FEMA's flood maps, putting his house in the flood zone with the toughest building restrictions, with pressure on the towns and the state to accept them. "It's blackmail," Reilly said, outside a FEMA meeting at Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School in Point Borough on Wednesday night. "I'm appalled that the town and the state adopted the flood maps and it's because they were being blackmailed by FEMA, because FEMA said, 'Adopt this or we won't give you money.' And you can quote me on that!" Reilly, who lives on Center Street in Sunshine Harbor, had been in an "A5 zone," but is now in a "V10 zone," …

Grants and referrals for Sandy-battered businesses
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno liked it when Point Beach shop owner Marla Lengle walked up to greet her at her store, but she liked it even better when she walked away. That's because Lengle walked away to make a sale at her women's clothing store, Lola's Boutique, on Bay Avenue in Point Beach. "I have to go take money," said Lengle, rushing off, to ring up a customer waiting at the cash register. "Great, great," Guadagno said, laughing, as Lengle strode away. Helping businesses in Point Beach and throughout the Sandy-battered Jersey Shore to make money was at the crux of Guadagno's visit to the downtown shopping area on Tuesday afternoon. So every time customers came into the store, and especially when they ponied up for a new blouse, jacket or …

Extra enforcement of mandate to wear seat belts in rear and front seats
"Click It or Ticket" starts now, meaning buckle up or be at greater risk of getting a ticket - not to mention getting injured in an accident. Point Borough is one of nearly 150 law enforcement agencies throughout the state that received a grant for extra seat belt enforcement, which starts today and continues through June 3. Point Borough, like most of the other police departments, received $4,000 to run the seatbelt enforcement checkpoints and saturation patrols, according to a prepared statement from the state Attorney General's office. Point Beach did not receive the grant this year, but will still be enforcing the seat belt law as part of their standard enforcement. The period of time for the extra enforcement includes Memorial Day …
