Monday marks the 44th annual Earth Day, a celebration that began in 1970 as a protest movement against pollution. Here are five facts about why we "go green" every April 22. 1. We have late U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson (D-WI) to thank for the official Earth Day celebration. But many credit John McConnell, an activist who proposed the day at a National UNESCO Conference in 1969, with founding Earth Day. While McConnell’s earlier Earth Day Proclamation received support from top United Nations officials, Nelson's work to have national teach-ins on April 22, 1970, spurred the national movement that became known as Earth Day. While the origins of April Fools' Day are sketchy at best, one of the more popular theories dates back to the 16th century. Prior to 1582, the new year began on April 1. When the new year was moved to Jan. 1 in 1582, there were some people who hadn't heard or didn't believe the change in the date, so they continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1. These "April fools" were often ridiculed by being sent on "fools' errands" or were made the butt of other practical jokes. Below are some other fun and interesting April Fools' Day facts:

December 11, 1992: Nor'Easter Wreaks Havoc at the Shore

The Jersey Shore was declared a disaster area; before Sandy, many considered it the "worst" in the region's history

It wasn't the last great storm. But, over the past five decades, and before Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, it was probably the biggest. On December 11, 1992, an intense nor’easter came ashore along New Jersey's coastline and remained there for three days. Strong winds hit upward to 80 miles per hour, and massive amounts of snow overwhelmed businesses and schools.  Flooding ravaged coastal towns. Toms River schools were closed a week due to the snowfall. Much of Long Beach Island, and nearly all of Sea Bright, was under water. Losing a car in the storm wasn't a freak accident; for some, it was part of the routine. Down the Shore: Firemen's Fair, 'Xanadu,' Flying History Tour

What to do at the beach this weekend

  Check out this weekend's best bets in the Jersey Shore region:  The annual Fair Haven Firemen's Fair, billed as the largest in New Jersey, returns Friday night. There will be rides and food, and of course, rides on firetrucks. The fair, held at the firehouse on River Road, runs through Sept. 1, excluding Sundays. A Trip Back In Time - Ocean County Historical Society Goes Victorian

The first "Victorian Extravaganza" set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat. at museum in Toms River

  The science of bee-keeping, the art of floral arranging and the necessity of soap-making are some of the skills on display at the Victorian Extravaganza at the Ocean County Historical Society on Saturday. The inaugural Victorian Extravaganza will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the society museum at 26 Hadley Avenue in Toms River. Chairperson Betsy Dudas said an all-day bee-keeping demonstration by the Uriah Creek Apiaries is planned. The society will also hold a plant sale featuring both indoor and outdoor plants. Beekeeper Mike Long plans to bring different sized beehives along with some specialized equipment to illustrate what's involved in getting honey from the bee.
