Sammy will move to a foster home, hospital staff says
The cocker spaniel who authorities charge was brought to an animal shelter by his abuser was released from a Monmouth County animal hospital Monday. "Sammy," estimated to be about 13 or 14 years old, was brought to the Monmouth County Animal Shelter by Keith Morgan, 56, of Brick, who told staff that he and his wife, Shauna Ewing Morgan, 43, found the dog in a garbage bag on the side of Belmar Boulevard in Wall. But authorities later said an investigation showed the couple owned the dog, who was covered in feces and urine and encased in its own matted fur, unable to walk. Fundraiser for Point Borough girl with kidney disease at Blue Claws Stadium were held Sunday night
The Lakewood Blue Claws and Point Pleasant Borough police vs. Point Pleasant Beach firefighters had a fundraiser softball game Sunday night to help a Point Borough girl in the fight of her life. A Blue Claws game, followed by a separate, fundraiser softball game, "Badges for Charity," were played at the Lakewood Blue Claws stadium to help a Point Pleasant Borough girl suffering from a rare kidney disease. Nicole D. Reed was injured and taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center
A Brick woman injured herself and was charged after allegedly hitting a car, a street sign and two small trees near Claridge Court and Herbertsville Road on Saturday night, police said. Nicole D. Reed, 39, Brick, is charged with careless driving, driving on the revoked list and leaving the scene of an accident, said Captain Richard Larsen. Reed was injured and unconscious when she was examined by the Point Boro First Aid Squad just after she hit the trees, Larsen said. The squad transported Reed to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, where blood was taken from Reed. Police are awaiting toxicological results on the blood test, Larsen said. Claridge Court re-opens
A woman was injured when her car lost control and hit a tree near the corner of Herbertsville Road and Claridge Court on Saturday night, according to the Point Boro First Aid Squad. The woman was semi-conscious when she was removed from her vehicle and transported by the squad to Jersey Shore Medical Center's trauma unit in Neptune, according to Squad Captain Andy Welsh. The type and extent of injuries, the driver's name, age, hometown and reason for losing control were not available on Saturday night. The squad and Point Borough Fire Department, using a Jaws of Life extrication device, cut the driver from the vehicle, Welsh said. Elementary schools and Borough, Beach and Bay Head businesses provide dinner and more to families with ill children
Point Borough Schools and local businesses worked together to provide a feast for families of ill children at the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. Students, families and staff at Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School and Ocean Road Elementary School, along with school district administrators and numerous businesses in Point Borough, Point Beach and Bay Head joined forces to provide a sumptuous dinner, including desserts, to about 90 people on April 30. The collaborative effort filled a few large vans with food that local school district and business owners drove to the Ronald McDonald House, where they served dinner to families going through difficult ordeals. 4 Injured, 1 Charged With DWI in Brick Accident
An early morning accident damaged three vehicles and resulted in injuries to four people, with one facing multiple motor vehicle charges including driving while intoxicated. The accident occurred at 1:49 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of routes 70 and 88, according to Brick Police Sgt. David G. Bedrosian. Police say Bryan Vanderburgh, 27, of Brick, was driving a 2012 Nisssan Frontier pickup and violated the red light signal as he was traveling eastbound on Route 70, approaching the Laurelton exchange. His vehicle struck a 1994 Acura Integra driven by Edwin Triana, 28, of Toms River, who was proceeding through the intersection on Route 88 in the westbound direction. Project will now include third floor; Meridian receives $5M gift from Hovnanian family
A $74 million project to expand Ocean Medical Center's emergency department and add hospital space has grown to an $82 million project that will include an additional floor beyond the two already proposed. Local officials and officials with Meridian Health System were on hand Thursday evening for a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony at the Jack Martin Boulevard hospital, which opened in the summer of 1984. Hospital officials also announced a $5 million donation toward the project from Edele Hovnanian in honor of her parents, Hirair and Anna Hovnanian, for whom the hospital's new emergency department will be named. Three people taken to hospitals
Three of the four people in two cars in an accident at Route 35 North and Forman Avenue late Thursday afternoon were injured and taken to hospitals. Police got the call at 4:08 p.m. and cleared the scene just after 5 p.m. Didier Villagra, 31, of Belmar, a passenger in one of the cars said the driver of the second car drove west on Forman, pass St. Peter's School, through a stop sign and into Route 35 and the car driven by his friend. Villagra said, "I told Douglas, 'Wait, wait,' but he couldn't, they were too close." He said his friend's name is Douglas, but could not remember his last name, that he is about 30 years old and lives in Spring Lake.
