Funds will help house volunteers helping Sandy victims
New Jersey First Lady Mary Pat Christie announced on Monday morning that the Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund is donating $31,300 to help Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church renovate facilities for out-of-town volunteers helping Sandy victims. This grant will be used to improve the church's Volunteer Village dormitory facilities, which house 36 volunteers per week and supply non-profits with volunteer labor for local home rebuilding. Christie toured the church's dormitory facilities, including bunk beds with mattresses donated by the US Army, bathrooms and a stage area where showers and dressing rooms will be constructed. But residents need town approval first
Some Mantoloking residents can go home on Friday, but only if they meet a series of the town's requirements. "We are ready to repopulate," says the town's website. "A big day for some and a bittersweet day for those of us who have lost homes or have significantly damaged houses." Others have had no power at all for 10 days
Gov. Christie told a gathering on Long Beach Island on Wednesday that the coming Nor'easter and anticipated snowfall would likely cause "a setback" in the work underway for full power restoration. Boy, he wasn't kidding. JCP&L, on its website, is acknowledging that the nor'easter has created new outages, often for customers who were hit with outages in the height of Sandy's destructive path, had power restored and are now in the cold darkness yet again. "Late Wednesday, heavy, wet snow and high winds from the nor'easter resulted in approximately 120,000 additional power outages in the Jersey Central Power & Light service territory," says the JCP&L website. Hey, God bless these folks, I'm sure their all doing a great job and we all thank them for their time and efforts. However, $31,000 doesn't really account for anything when you think about all the moneys donated and supposedly to be given to the flood victims. I'm a BIG Chris Christy fan, but come on gov. We got a lot of people that really need the help. more ›
