Point Beach Moves on Boardwalk Fix

A contract is awarded to fix a section damaged by Irene as engineer prepares for the bigger job brought on by Sandy

Point Pleasant Beach Council awarded a contract to fix a section of boardwalk damaged in Tropical Storm Irene last year and authorized the municipal engineer to prepare bid specs for reconstruction of Sandy-battered sections of boardwalk. The council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to award a contract to Albert Marine for $290,210 to fix the stretch of boardwalk in front of Lucky's Arcade. That section, north of the southerly section of Trenton Avenue and the Boardwalk, was damaged when Irene hit Point Beach in August 2011. The section was still functional and did not have to be closed off. Point Beach Business Administrator Christine Riehl said on Thursday afternoon, "We have not established a start date, but it will be sometime in …

Brick Barrier Island Residents May Gain More Access Soon

Mayor says he's just waiting for state approval

Brick hopes to allow its barrier island residents and property owners to be able to drive to their properties in their own vehicles "soon," but the township needs state approval first. "We hope it will be soon, we hope it's within days," said Mayor Stephen Acropolis, on a bus tour Thursday of many of the township's Sandy-ravaged waterfront and low-lying sections. "We're just waiting for some construction work to be cleared, for Route 35 to be opened and for approval from the state Department of Transportation." On Thursday morning, Acropolis, Police Chief Nils Bergquist, other police officers and the National Guard traveled by police-escorted bus with a limited number of media to tour the township's barrier island and other damaged areas …

JCP&L Working on Point Beach Power Outages

Process to replace faulty meters explained at Friday council meeting

JCP&L crews are working on restoring power to a widely-darkened Point Beach, as electrical inspectors continue to identify homes and businesses that have water-damaged meters. As complaints have mounted from many residents and businesses who have been without power for 11 days, and some that had power restored only to have it snatched away again by the nor'easter, the town has been trying to expedite the process for the lights to be turned back on, officials said at a Point Beach emergency council meeting at Borough Hall on Friday afternoon. On Friday night, 1,749 JCP&L customers in Point Beach were still in the dark, according to JCP&L's outage map. That's an improvement from Thursday's count of 2,077, but still up from the Nov. 1 tally…

Inspectors will be walking door to door in many areas of Point Beach to inspect electrical services and building integrity starting at 8 a.m. today, according to the police department. When Patch was made aware of this news on Thursday night, there was no one available to explain who the inspectors are, which parts of town they will visit first today (Fri., Nov. 9) or any other details. The Point Pleasant Beach Building Department will be open from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday. "The Building Department is requesting that all building owners and tenants inspect their properties immediately, if they have not done so already," says a prepared statement from the police department. "All owners and tenants of residential and business …

Point Beach Emergency Meeting Friday

Point Beach Council to Discuss Outages and Meters

Point Beach Council will hold an emergency meeting at 3 p.m. Friday to discuss ongoing power outages and problems with water-damaged utility meters. The meeting will be at Borough Hall on New Jersey Avenue. Mayor Vincent Barrella scheduled the meeting "to address a plan for the power issues in Point Pleasant Beach. We have invited representatives from JCP&L, but have no confirmation from them as of yet," said Point Beach Business Administrator Chris Riehl in an email on Thursday. Barrella said the state Department of Community Affairs is working on scheduling electrical inspectors during the next few days to inspect JCP&L meters that were damaged "during substantial flooding" on various homes and businesses during Sandy. "Residential will …

JCP&L to Continue Working on Outages "As Safety Permits"

Still 74,012 in the dark in Ocean and Monmouth counties

There are currently 28,176 JCP&L customers without power in Ocean County and 45,836 without power in Monmouth County, according to an update on the JCP&L website. Those numbers change constantly as crews continue to work on outages throughout the region. However, the nor'easter starting to move into the area may cause new outages as well as coastal flooding, according to the National Weather Service. JCP&L, in a prepared statement, says: "Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) has restored power to more than 900,000 of the 1.2 million JCP&L customers affected by Hurricane Sandy, marking five consecutive days where crews have restored at least 100,000 customers per day. While restoration continues, JCP&L is preparing for a Nor'easter that is …
