Still no explanation of cause of surge that affected parts of Point Boro
Were any of your home appliances, surge protectors, circuit breakers, computers, equipment or food affected by last Thursday's power surge in Point Borough? If you haven't done so already, call 1-800-662-3115 to file a claim for the value of the damage. JCP&L will investigate and compensate if they find the loss was due to a JCP&L defect or malfunction. So far, no word from the company on what caused the power surge that fried everything from refrigerators to computer equipment and sent firefighters running from one call to another for hours in parts of the Borough. Ron Morano, a JCP&L spokesperson, said late Monday afternoon that the utility company is still investigating the cause of the surge and will release further information when …

Surge triggered fire alarms all over town, sending volunteer firefighters scrambling
JCP&L is investigating a power surge that triggered fire alarms and sent volunteer firefighters zipping all over Point Borough on Thursday. "We had about 50 calls from people in that area, so we sent our people to the substation at Route 88 and Lynn Road and to check the two circuits out of that substation, to see if there was any problem with the circuits," said Peter Johner, JCP&L area manager external affairs on Friday morning. "We have not found what the problem is, we're still investigating," Johner said. "We've had people working all night long to see what caused this voltage problem." Some customers reported they were having an outage. "They were not actually having an outage, it was a surge or a voltage problem that was …

Final hearing on a 4.1 percent increase for state's second largest utility
The sixth and final hearing on a request for a rate increase by the state’s second largest utility company met with a mix of praise and criticism for Jersey Central Power & Light Wednesday at Freehold Township’s Town Hall. JCP&L, fresh off widespread criticism for its handling of Hurricane Sandy and the Nor’easter that followed, is seeking a 4.1 percent increase in the rates it charges its 1.1 million customers – many of whom were without power for up to two weeks after this winter’s storms. The Morristown-based company, the main power supplier in Monmouth, Ocean and Morris counties, is seeking to recoup the $630 million it spent on repairs following Sandy. It has petitioned the state regulatory board -- the Board of Public Utilities -- …

Utility company petitioning state board for consumer rate increase
The state Board of Public Utilities is scheduled to hold a pair of hearings on Wednesday on a proposed rate increase for Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L). The first meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Freehold Township Municipal Building, at Schanck and Stillwell Corner roads. The second meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at the same location. The utility company, roundly criticized for its response during Hurricane Sandy and the nor’easter that followed, wants a rate increase of 4.5 percent in its effort to raise $603 million the company says it needs to repair infrastructure damaged in hurricane’s Sandy and Irene. The company faces opposition. "We will speak for the hundreds of ratepayers who are tired of paying more for less service…

JCP&L is taking steps to improve its ability to communicate with first responders during a large-scale emergency. The utility will install components of the New Jersey Preparedness Emergency Communication Network at its regional dispatching operations in Morristown and Red Bank, spokesman Ron Morano said Thursday. The facilities manage the daily work on the company's electrical system and provide coordination when repair crews are dispatched during widespread power outages. “Participating in this system will enhance our ability to share real-time critical information with our customers, communities and first responders during emergency situations,” JCP&L President Don Lynch said in a release. “Joining this system is one of the many things…

Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs working on survey to address the problem
Call it adding insult to injury. That's Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari's reaction to utilities that continue to send bills to Superstorm Sandy victims who may not even have a home left or one they can live in. "If you lost your home, it no longer exists," he said at the Feb. 21 Board of Freeholders meeting. "But you are still getting a bill." Vicari said he has already spoken to Jersey Central Power and Light representatives, who have agreed to make corrections in bills sent to residents who lost their homes or are displaced. "Adjustments will be made," he said. "We are working on that. We hear what people are saying." Many residents who have been displaced are now actually being double billed - first for utility usage in homes they can no …

Utility company lists communication enhancements
Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) is saying that it will improve its communication with towns during "significant storm events," after the utility company was criticized by many municipal officials after Hurricane Sandy. JCP&L announced new practices and upcoming technology improvements at meetings on Jan. 3 in Eatontown and Morristown with members of the League of Municipalities, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and the New Jersey State Police. A news release from JCP&L states that the communication enhancements will include: "We are committed to continuous improvement for our customers and welcome the opportunity to work with state, county and municipal officials over the next several months as we implement these new …
