Mantoloking among stops
Prince Harry's stateside visit includes stops in Mantoloking and Seaside Heights scheduled for tomorrow. The May 14 itinerary, announced earlier this month, puts the British royal on the barrier island visiting Hurricane-Sandy damaged areas. The one-day stop in New Jersey will have Gov. Chris Christie escorting Prince Harry, who is in the United States through this week. His schedule has him arriving in Manhattan today after stops in the Midwest. Prince Harry’s Friday itinerary included laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery last week. He also visited Section 60 at the cemetery, which is where military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan are buried. Thursday, he was on Capitol Hill and at the…

The event to celebrate music and mothers is sponsored by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Ashley Grant, concert pianist and harpist, will perform the concert. There will be a "love offering" presented to St. Paul's to help serve Sandy victims (see attached PDF). The church has been providing free, hot meals and support to Sandy victims since the storm struck the area. St. Paul's contines to serve dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is in great need of volunteers and donations. For more information about specific daily needs, please contact the church, at the corner of Bridge and West Lake avenues, at (732) …

Both the party boat crowd and shore-based locals getting in on the action
As local anglers try their collective hands at spring fishing after a tough winter all around, the striped bass seem to be cooperating as water temperatures slowly rise. Starting in the northern reaches of this column's publication area, the crew of the Big Mohawk out of Belmar finished their blackfish season this week and decided to dabble in the bass fishery on Tuesday. The result: everyone on board got their limit of stripers. "I know that is what so many of you have been waiting to hear," Capt. Chris wrote on the boat's website. The boat, which sails 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, had a similarly good day Thursday after taking Wednesday off. Few reports came in from the suds in the Manasquan and Point Pleasant areas, but anecdotally, anglers …

The governor held a table discussion with area business owners about the prospects of the upcoming summer season.
Gov. Christie isn't just confident that the Jersey Shore is ready to welcome back visitors to its beaches and businesses, he's sure of it. At McLoone's Pier House in Long Branch Thursday afternoon, Christie held a round table discussion with several area business owners to listen to their concerns and expectations for the summer, and to ask them to let him know what the state can do to facilitate the coast's continued recovery following Hurricane Sandy. Despite some lingering issues, the message was largely uniform. "The good news I heard from them is that they're open for business." The goal now, Christie said, is to spread that message, to let the shore's visitors know that their favorite summer destination is ready to welcome them for …

Legendary forecaster in Wednesday prediction: above-average 2013 Atlantic basin hurricane season due to 'anomalous' ocean warming
As the Jersey Shore continues its recovery from Superstorm Sandy, a Colorado State University professor who is widely considered a national authority on tropical weather prediction has released his team's first forecast for the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season – and the news isn't good for coastal residents. This year's hurricane season, which begins June 1, will be above average, the team led by Dr. William Gray predicted in a forecast issued Wednesday. The forecast team calls for 18 named storms during the hurricane season, nine of which are expected to become hurricanes and four of those major hurricanes, meaning they will reach category three status or higher. Storms receive a name when they reach tropical storm status, meaning they pack…

Jenkinson's, Risden's, Martell's, Bradshaw's and Maryland Avenue beaches to be open
The public beaches in Point Pleasant Beach will be fully open by Memorial Day weekend or before, company officials said on Friday afternoon. While some Sandy-bashed beaches at the Jersey Shore are not going to be fully open by summer's unofficial start, those in Point Beach are on track to be accessible and staffed as usual. "The beaches will be open 100 percent the weekend before Memorial Day weekend and everything will be safe and clean, as it was last year," said Anthony Storino, president of Jenkinson's. Alice Lyons, owner of Risden's, said the beach will be open fully by Memorial Day weekend. Carla Vitale, daughter of Jay Vitale, owner of Aqua-Serve, said that the Maryland Avenue and Bradshaw's beaches will be open this summer as …

Monday, April 1
These photos and video of the River Avenue Beach in Point Borough, Manasquan Inlet, Point Beach, Lavallette, Manasquan, Asbury Park, the Barnegat Lighthouse and the Casino Pier area in Seaside Heights were shot by a camera strapped to a copter. Specifically, area resident Bob Alberding had his camera strapped onto a "DJI 550 multirotor with custom camera gimbal added to it" as it soared above the beach and shot the Sandy-ravaged Casino Pier and the roller coaster famously bobbing in the ocean. It's only the camera, and not Alberding, strapped to the copter. Explaining the benefits of his well-equipped copter soaring above the sea, Alberding said, "These are being used by film makers more because it is basically a camera jib with …

NJ Natural Gas offering higher rebates to Sandy-flooded residents
It was bad enough that Superstorm Sandy flooded Jim Reilly's Point Borough home, forcing him and his wife to live elsewhere. But then came FEMA's flood maps, putting his house in the flood zone with the toughest building restrictions, with pressure on the towns and the state to accept them. "It's blackmail," Reilly said, outside a FEMA meeting at Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School in Point Borough on Wednesday night. "I'm appalled that the town and the state adopted the flood maps and it's because they were being blackmailed by FEMA, because FEMA said, 'Adopt this or we won't give you money.' And you can quote me on that!" Reilly, who lives on Center Street in Sunshine Harbor, had been in an "A5 zone," but is now in a "V10 zone," …
