Jenkinson's, Risden's, Martell's, Bradshaw's and Maryland Avenue beaches to be open
The public beaches in Point Pleasant Beach will be fully open by Memorial Day weekend or before, company officials said on Friday afternoon. While some Sandy-bashed beaches at the Jersey Shore are not going to be fully open by summer's unofficial start, those in Point Beach are on track to be accessible and staffed as usual. "The beaches will be open 100 percent the weekend before Memorial Day weekend and everything will be safe and clean, as it was last year," said Anthony Storino, president of Jenkinson's. Alice Lyons, owner of Risden's, said the beach will be open fully by Memorial Day weekend. Carla Vitale, daughter of Jay Vitale, owner of Aqua-Serve, said that the Maryland Avenue and Bradshaw's beaches will be open this summer as …

NJ Department of Environmental Protection holds public hearing in Long Branch
A huge crowd came to Long Branch City Hall for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) public hearing to protest the potential adoption of FEMA's advisory base flood elevation (ABFE) maps as the new elevation standard for the the state. The crowd on Thursday night was mostly comprised of many unhappy homeowners from around the state impacted by Hurricane Sandy. "The thought of increasing flood insurance premiums into the tens of thousands of dollars is daunting," Toms River resident Margaret Quinn said. Quinn, who lives in the Silverton section of Toms River, said her house was more than 50 percent damaged. She, like so many others, has been displaced by the hurricane and is now faced with rebuilding questions and …

Point Borough Public Works crews have been cleaning out storm drains and basin tops and getting plowing equipment ready as a winter storm is expected to cause at least some coastal flooding between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Jude Walker, Borough Road Department Supervisor, said the Borough had already been working, during the past few weeks, on the annual maintenance of storm drains. "We changed it up this year, because of Sandy, we started in the areas hardest hit by Sandy," Walker said. "We did Lovelandtown, Sunshine Harbor, Bay Head Shores, other hard hit sections. We also had the trucks out the last few days, going over the hardest hit areas again, in anticipation of this, but also to clean up any remnants left behind …

Also says state working with federal officials to fairly disburse block grants to residents
Come to the Jersey Shore for Valentine's Day and then come back in the spring, summer and fall. That was the message from Acting Gov. Kim Guadagno who kicked off the state's "Show your Love for the Jersey Shore" campaign on Monday afternoon at Jenkinson's Aquarium on the boardwalk. "Come to the Jersey Shore for Valentine's Day, we're open for business," Guadagno said, standing at a podium just across from the penguins. She said it's crucial that the private-public marketing campaign effort, which is being done in conjunction with other marketing campaigns, gets the message out so the state's $38 billion tourism industry can again be robust. "The Jersey Shore is a large piece of that industry," she said. "We need to keep our numbers up …

Mayor says he's just waiting for state approval
Brick hopes to allow its barrier island residents and property owners to be able to drive to their properties in their own vehicles "soon," but the township needs state approval first. "We hope it will be soon, we hope it's within days," said Mayor Stephen Acropolis, on a bus tour Thursday of many of the township's Sandy-ravaged waterfront and low-lying sections. "We're just waiting for some construction work to be cleared, for Route 35 to be opened and for approval from the state Department of Transportation." On Thursday morning, Acropolis, Police Chief Nils Bergquist, other police officers and the National Guard traveled by police-escorted bus with a limited number of media to tour the township's barrier island and other damaged areas …

Engaged couple gets help with flooded house in Brick
Jonathan Miller and Megan Baglivio from the Point Pleasant First Aid and Emergency Squad never expected to be on the Ellen DeGeneres TV show, much less to leave the set with the gift of their lives. The two volunteers, from "Point Beach EMS," the squad that serves Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head and Mantoloking, are getting their flooded home gutted and made over by Kitchen Cousins, professional home remodelers, thanks to the generosity of DeGeneres. The home, on Princeton Avenue in Brick, is Miller's home that the couple spent a lot of time renovating during the summer to get it ready for when they live there as a married couple, according to what is discussed in the video clip. The renovations to the kitchen and living room were destroyed…
