Gee Gee's torn down, while Borough Beach Headquarters going up next door
Hurricane Sandy heavily damaged large portions of Manasquan's beachfront, and this week one of the most well-known businesses fell to the wrecking crew. Gee Gee's most damaged portion, its south side, was demolished this week. The northside is being prepared to reopen, selling pizza and other boardwalk food in time for the 2013 season. But the landmark business became a casualty to Hurricane Sandy and was torn into a pile of rubble this week. However, the signs of destruction that is Gee Gee's is being flanked by rebuilding to its north and south. While the building is renovating on the north side, the borough of Manasquan is rebuilding its beach headquarters directly to the south. The beach headquarters is quickly taking shape, with …

No injuries reported. Fire department responds
St. Denis School was evacuated Friday after the school's boiler malfunctioned, spilling steam on the first floor. In an announcement from the school, officials said all students were evacuated quickly and safely after a main steam line from the boiler became loose. The first floor hallway was flooded with steam. The incident caused loud noises, and the steam gave the appearance of smoke spilling out of first floor windows from the building on Union and Virginia Avenue in Manasquan. With numerous fire trucks in the parking lot, the situation appeared worse than it was, wrote Rev. Ed Blanchett in the announcement. "It looked and sounded worse than it actually was, but we can certainly understand everyone's sensitivity to such events after …

Governor provides update on rebuilding, with focus on flood maps and Blue Acres buyout, and plenty of anecdotes
Gov. Chris Christie predicted the Federal Emergency Management Agency will scale back tough new flood maps it issued last December, according to news reports. Those maps place many more properties in flood zones, requiring many of them to be elevated if their owners don't want to see flood insurance rates soar, according to reports. The initial FEMA flood maps, which could create thousands more in insurance premiums and have residents raising their houses feet off the ground, are "too aggressive," said Gov. Christie at Thursday's town hall meeting. He was addressing a packed crowd of officials and residents in the Hurricane Sandy damaged town of Manasquan, and Christie returned to the complicated and controversial topic of what would …

Rising above the devastation; it's a new day — that's the mentality behind a concert Jan. 5 to aid Manasquan. Every ticket dollar will translate to rebuilding efforts for Manasquan. The "Manasquan: A New Day" concert is scheduled for Jan. 5 and will donate all ticket and ad sales to rebuilding Manasquan. "The people of Manasquan have chosen not to allow ourselves stay down, but rather rise above and rebuild for a new day. We’ve pulled ourselves up by our bootstraps to get ready for a new year and a better future,” said Manasquan Mayor George Dempsey in a prepared statement. The 8 p.m. concert is at the Algonquin Arts Theatre, working in conjunction with the Borough of Manasquan. The proceeds specifically go toward the “Manasquan Hurricane …

Children skateboarding, houses rotting
The damage to Manasquan's eastern portions came into clearer view this week after the borough lifted access restrictions to eastern portions Monday. The area allowed the return of residents as well as onlookers and contractors who were taking in the damage and reopening areas deemed safe. While so many businesses and homes need renovation, and the remnants of storm-swept sand still lined many streets, still residents went about their normal routines as much as possible. Couples walked dogs along the battered beachfront. Children skatedboarded up and down First Avenue. Cars drove by, Christmas trees tied to the roof. But still, spray painted red X's noted which buildings saw the worst damage. Contractor vans lined the streets and driveways…

State agencies, legislators, local officials attend special hearing in Wall
Municipalities throughout the region are looking for answers about how to deal with the lasting impact of superstorm Sandy. State Sen. Robert Singer and Assemblyman Sean Kean (both R-30) provided an opportunity Thursday night for residents to hear directly from relevant agencies at a special hearing attended by local officials at the Wall Municipal Complex. Representatives from FEMA, the Department of Banking and Insurance, the Small Business Administration and others answered questions on topics ranging from how shore towns can rebuild their boardwalks to how more inland towns can afford to clear tons of trees and debris from their roadways. "We really had a concentrated few towns that were impacted to the level where they need to avail …

Scheduled 30-minute openings for marine traffic Saturday
The Glimmer Glass Bridge between Brielle and Manasquan will remain closed to vehicular traffic until further notice, officials said. Once the beach area is opened up to the general public, officials expect the bridge to be reopened for vehicles within the existing three-ton weight limit, according to a borough release. The bridge on Saturday, Nov. 17, has 30-minute scheduled openings for vessel traffic at the following times: 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., the release says. Mariners may request an alternate opening with at least 48 hours notice by contacting Jon Moren with the Monmouth County Bridge Department at 732-431-7760 or 732-308-2963 during normal business hours.
