Hurricane Sandy

Martell's to Use Risden's Lot for Equipment

UPDATE: Martell's did not yet apply for building permit

Martell's will use a parking lot owned by Risden's as a storage and staging area for building materials and equipment to rebuild its Tiki Bar pier. And the decision to use the lot between Trenton and Forman avenues was nearly final last Friday, even as Councilman Bret Gordon was changing his vote to allow Martell's to use a town-owned lot on New Jersey and Ocean avenues. "The agreement is almost finalized," said Ronald Gasiorowski, Martell's attorney, in a telephone interview on Monday afternoon. On Tuesday night, the Point Beach Council voted 3 to 2 against allowing Martell's to use a town-owned parking lot on New Jersey and Ocean avenues behind a building owned by Risden's and rented out this past summer by Surf Taco. Gordon and …

This article proves what many who have suffered from Sandy already know...if we're going to recover, it's going to be through the kindness and help of our friends and neighbors. Sadly, the government, and that apparently includes our local government, isn't going to be much help to us. (Yes, I know that Gordon changed his vote, but it's just insane that the Council chose to deny Martells the …   more ›

Hurricane Sandy

Martell's Plan to Rebuild Pier Hits a Bump

Correction: David Bassinder asked the town if Martell's can use the parking lot during rebuilding (see below)

Point Beach Council is not allowing Martell's Tiki Bar to use a town-owned parking lot to store lumber and equipment needed to rebuild the end of the pier destroyed by Sandy. Councilmembers Kristine Tooker, Bret Gordon and Michael Corbally, at Tuesday night's council meeting, voted against Martell's to use a parking lot behind the south end of Risden's Beach and off New Jersey Avenue to store materials and equipment for roughly 5 to 10 days. Counclimembers William Mayer and Stephen Reid voted yes. Councilmember Tim Lurie was absent. Mayor Vincent Barrella did not get a vote because in the Borough Council form of government the mayor only votes when there is a tie. Correction: Barrella said that David Bassinder, the former owner of …

Vito and Junior, the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs disagrees with you. They were responsible for the report saying PPB should have 25 full time officers. According to the report (which the State created) PPB PD is 2 short. But go ahead and continue to think that nothing happens in PPB during the 9 months of "off season" time.   more ›

New Alcohol Ordinance on Point Beach Tuesday Night Agenda

New ordinance still mandates that bars stop serving alcohol at midnight or pay a fee

A new ordinance compelling bars in Point Beach to either stop serving alcohol at midnight or pay a fee is on the agenda for tonight's Point Beach Borough Council meeting. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Borough Hall on New Jersey Avenue. The new ordinance (see first attachment) no longer gives bars an option on  how long past midnight they want to serve alcohol. The choice is to stop at midnight or stop at 2 a.m. The first version of the ordinance (see third attachment), narrowly introduced at the March 20 meeting, gave bars the option to stop serving alcohol at a time of their choosing between midnight and 2 a.m. if they paid the town a fee, based partially on maximum occupancy. The original ordinance is on tonight's agenda for …

Heat Draws Crowds to Boardwalk and Beach

Some schools in NJ off for spring break

Monday's unseasonably high heat drew crowds to the Point Pleasant Beach Boardwalk, with some of the same possibly expected tomorrow. While the high hit 86 degrees in much of northern Ocean County on Monday, it was somewhat cooler and breezier on the oceanfront. That some schools in central and northern New Jersey are closed for either part or all of this week for spring break is likely part of the reason there was a decent size crowd that congregated in the warm sun at Jenkinson's Boardwalk and Martell's Tiki Bar and Seabreeze and beach on Monday afternoon. The throngs thronged most at Martell's Tiki Bar and beach, where Dr. Cheeko was performing on stage. And there may be another crowd around on Tuesday with more warm weather on the way, …
