UPDATE: Martell's did not yet apply for building permit
Martell's will use a parking lot owned by Risden's as a storage and staging area for building materials and equipment to rebuild its Tiki Bar pier. And the decision to use the lot between Trenton and Forman avenues was nearly final last Friday, even as Councilman Bret Gordon was changing his vote to allow Martell's to use a town-owned lot on New Jersey and Ocean avenues. "The agreement is almost finalized," said Ronald Gasiorowski, Martell's attorney, in a telephone interview on Monday afternoon. On Tuesday night, the Point Beach Council voted 3 to 2 against allowing Martell's to use a town-owned parking lot on New Jersey and Ocean avenues behind a building owned by Risden's and rented out this past summer by Surf Taco. Gordon and …

Mayor acts Fri. after Bret Gordon says he will change vote
Mayor Vincent Barrella said he told Martell's on Friday that the town is allowing them to use a south end parking lot to store building materials and equipment to rebuild the end of Martell's Tiki Bar pier. The mayor's contact with Ed Brannagan, Martell's manager, followed Point Beach Councilman Bret Gordon saying in an email on Friday morning that he is changing his vote to allow Martell's to use the lot. It appears, at this point, that there are now enough council votes for Martell's to set up shop in the parking lot behind Risden's beach and its southernmost building on the boardwalk, just off New Jersey Avenue, rented by Surf Taco this past summer. Saturday Update: However, there is a question now about whether Martell's needs …

Correction: David Bassinder asked the town if Martell's can use the parking lot during rebuilding (see below)
Point Beach Council is not allowing Martell's Tiki Bar to use a town-owned parking lot to store lumber and equipment needed to rebuild the end of the pier destroyed by Sandy. Councilmembers Kristine Tooker, Bret Gordon and Michael Corbally, at Tuesday night's council meeting, voted against Martell's to use a parking lot behind the south end of Risden's Beach and off New Jersey Avenue to store materials and equipment for roughly 5 to 10 days. Counclimembers William Mayer and Stephen Reid voted yes. Councilmember Tim Lurie was absent. Mayor Vincent Barrella did not get a vote because in the Borough Council form of government the mayor only votes when there is a tie. Correction: Barrella said that David Bassinder, the former owner of …

Event will be held at Martell's, Point Beach
Beer on the Boards will be held from 12:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at Martell's on the boardwalk in Point Beach. Those who want to attend are urged to purchase tickets in advance. The Point Pleasant Beach Chamber of Commerce, which will receive a percentage of the proceeds from the event, is encouraging all to attend. The event will be held rain or shine. There are "beer drinker" sessions, where the price includes beer and a food buffet, and "designated driver" sessions, where no alcoholic beverages are included, but food and non-alcoholic drinks are part of the purchase price. The website page promoting the event says: "A craft beer and gourmet food extravaganza on the boardwalk at Martell's, with two sessions: afternoon (12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m…

.........if he puts it in writing
An attorney for Jenkinson's and Martell's said he is willing to look at the mayor's proposal for dropping the local midnight bar closing law - but he wants to see it in writing. "He should have his attorney send me his proposal in writing," said attorney Ronald Gasiorowski on Thursday, when asked to respond to Mayor Vincent Barrella's comments at the Tuesday night Point Beach Council meeting. Barrella said at the meeting that he would not mind repealing the midnight bar closing ordinance if the boardwalk businesses would first withdraw lawsuits against that and the District 4 parking plan. On Thursday, when told of Gasiorowski's response, Barrella said in an interview on Thursday that he thinks it would be a lot more productive to meet and…

Barrella said he'd be willing to pull ordinance if all lawsuits were first withdrawn
Point Beach Mayor Vincent Barrella said at Tuesday night's council meeting that he would be willing to repeal the proposed earlier bar closing ordinance if all lawsuits against that and the District 4 parking plan were first dropped. During his committee report, Barrella brought up the topic of the controversial earlier bar closing proposal that was temporarily "stayed" by the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control and still being fought in litigation filed by Jenkinson's and Martell's. "If the lawsuits were dropped, I'd have no problem dropping the midnight bar closing ordinance," he said. "But you can't withdraw an ordinance while litigation is pending." He said after the meeting, "I was told that the bars have been trying to quiet…

Staff who saved boy from drowning honored by 10th district legislators
Three Martell's employees who had saved a boy from drowning in the ocean in front of Martell's in Point Beach were honored on Monday by state lawmakers. Matt Inman, Jim Howell and Nick Haines, Martell's staff members who rescued a boy who had ventured into the ocean when the beach was red-flagged and unguarded on July 21, were honored by 10th District legislators. Senator Jim Holzapfel and Assemblymen David Wolfe and Greg McGuckin presented state resolutions to the Martell's employees outside Martell's in Point Pleasant Beach. Martell's, Risden's, Bradshaw's and Maryland Avenue beaches will not be guarded
Jenkinson's beach may be the only beach in Point Pleasant Beach that has lifeguards on Sunday. On Friday, Marilou Halvorsen, Jenkinson's Marketing Director, said the plan was to have lifeguards working on Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting. Because Jenkinson's other businesses, including rides and eateries, will be open, there will be bathrooms open. Lifeguards and police have consistently implored the public not to venture into the ocean at unguarded beaches. That warning applies today when predictions are that rough surf will continue and, as of Sunday morning, there was a rip current warning. A staff member at Martell's said there is no plan to have lifeguards manning the beach at Martell's on Sunday. However, its restaurants, …

Fine now set at $48
District 4 parking plan tickets no longer require a court appearance and now cost $48, according to two Point Beach council members. The tickets can now be paid by mail or online, only requiring a mandatory court appearance for those pleading not guilty, wrote Point Beach Councilmember Michael Corbally in Patch Comments on Monday. "Letters will go out this week for folks who have received tickets prior to today," Corbally wrote. "Sorry for the confusion." Corbally could not be reached to elaborate. However, Councilmember Kristine Tooker, when reached by telephone on Monday evening, said she, other council members and police officials had received an email on Monday afternoon that the mandatory court appearance had been eliminated. …

Mayor says at council meeting, "I won't be intimidated by lawsuits."
A group including a marina, fishing boats and Point Beach residents failed for the second time to convince a court to temporarily put the brakes on the town's new parking plan. Meanwhile, boardwalk businesses have filed their second legal action against the town's effort to close bars at midnight. This time, Jenkinson's and Martell's have filed a lawsuit in Superior Court, which follows an appeal to the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). That's not to be confused with the lawsuit the two largest boardwalk businesses filed to fight the District 4 parking plan. For anyone keeping score, so far, it's Boardwalk 1, Point Beach 2. The Boardwalk win was getting an injunction to be allowed to stay open until 2 a.m. until ABC makes…

This article proves what many who have suffered from Sandy already know...if we're going to recover, it's going to be through the kindness and help of our friends and neighbors. Sadly, the government, and that apparently includes our local government, isn't going to be much help to us. (Yes, I know that Gordon changed his vote, but it's just insane that the Council chose to deny Martells the …   more ›
