Seminars for homeowners and contractors on Feb. 12
Free mold remediation workshops are being held in Neptune on Feb. 12. The workshops are presented by the Affordable Housing Alliance and NeighborWorks® America and instruction is provided by The National Center for Healthy Housing. The Affordable Housing Alliance is using conference space at the Asbury Park Press building, 3601 Highway 66, Neptune for the workshops. A morning session, 8:45 am to 12:45 pm, will share up-to-date information about health risks, pre-work inspections, work set-up and staging, systematic clean-out and proper tear-out procedures and more information important for contractors, building inspectors and other housing professionals working on mold remediation. Dec. 9 is deadline to put storm-related debris at curb
Home renovation debris should not be put at the curb because the town will not be reimbursed by FEMA for disposing of that type of refuse, according to Point Beach officials. "Notification received from DEP (state Department of Environmental Protection) states that non-storm related waste, such as home renovation scraps and materials, is not considered 'debris' and therefore is not eligible for FEMA reimbursement," says a prepared statement from Point Beach Business Administrator Christine Riehl. "In order to recoup maximum dollars for all our residents, it is very important that you do not place these materials out to the curb for collection." Tax assessments may be lowered if property flooded or damaged in storm
UPDATE: New form attached to story for property owners requesting lower tax assessments If you own a home or business damaged by Sandy, you can ask your town for a lower tax assessment. In Point Pleasant Beach, the town issued a notice advising property owners that to request a reassessment, they should write to the town and include the following information: "Property Address, Block/Lot, Name of Owner(s) Contact Numbers - Cell and Land Lines Address Where Currently Living - Permanent or Temporary Email Address Describe the damage in as much detail as possible. Mold can grow in water-logged flooring
Mold could be growing right now in flooring of homes and businesses flooded by Sandy. Point Pleasant Beach is strongly recommending that "all floodwater-soaked building elements such as such as wallboard, insulation, trim and flooring be removed." The exposed areas of wood need to be dried and sterilized prior to the replacement of new material, says a notice from Point Pleasant Beach. "All floodwater-damaged electrical equipment, including switches, outlets, breakers and other devices, must be replaced," the notice says.
