Fire Department Elects Shrewsberry as New Chief

Mulligan steps down after serving as chief for 12 years

  James Shrewsberry, who has served as a lieutenant, captain, chief engineer and deputy chief of the Point Borough Fire Department, has been elected as department fire chief. Daniel Mulligan, who has been chief for 12 years, decided not to run for reelection, but will continue to serve as a member of the volunteer department. Shrewsberry, who has owned property in Point Borough for 20 years and lived in the Borough full-time for 10 years, said his primary goal is to continue carrying out the goals and objectives pursued by Mulligan. "He's a hard act to follow," said Shrewsberry, who has been a volunteer in the department for seven years. "He's a good leader. He knows the job and he's very good at it." UPDATE: Point Boro Fire Under Control

Residents and their dog got out of their Monmouth Court home safely

Residents at a home at the end of the cul-de-sac on Monmouth Court in Point Borough and their dog were not hurt in a fire that at least three fire departments had to battle to bring under control early Friday evening. Bonnie Fitzgerald and Glen Thorn, a friend who was visiting them and their dog, Sadie, who is about three months old, are all safe. Monmouth Court is off Dorsett Dock Road, which is parallel to Beaver Dam Road. Thorn said he and his wife became aware there was a problem when a friend of theirs who was visiting was upstairs. "We heard him moving around upstairs," Thorn said. Apparently the friend had become aware of the fire.
