Center section of boardwalk slated for work after the summer may be replaced with wood, not rebuilt with Trex
The "plaza" section of the boardwalk, from Arnold Avenue to Jenkinson's Aquarium, might be rebuilt with wood, not with Trex. There was discussion at Tuesday night's Point Beach Council meeting about rebuilding the plaza section with wood, not Trex, the plastic material that is being used to replace the sections of the boardwalk which were damaged by Tropical Storm Irene or Superstorm Sandy. But there was a general consensus at the meeting at Borough Hall that that decision won't be made until council gets additional information from Borough Engineer Ray Savacool. Based on information from Savacool so far, it appears that removing and replacing the boards in the plaza section with wood boards would cost about $280,000 and rebuilding with …

Summer kickoff revenue will help center help cancer patients
The Cancer Concern Center's Summer Kickoff party on Saturday raised $5,000 that will be used to help cancer patients and survivors. About 150 people enjoyed the Saturday night fundraiser, featuring live bands, a buffet and lots of sunshine on the Patio Bar at the Wharfside, Channel Drive, Point Pleasant Beach. The revenue has been sorely needed to help keep the all-volunteer center in operation, since their biggest fundraiser of the year was canceled after Superstorm Sandy. Since the storm, the center has been dealing with the triple whammy of losing a fundraiser, having less available cash flow than ever, and many of their officials, board members, clients and volunteers being flooded by Sandy, explained Heather Keefe, who does pro-bono…

Boardwalk to be done by Memorial Day weekend
Shortly after Point Beach announced it had not received a dime of FEMA money, FEMA announced it's sending the oceanfront town $2.1 million to help pay for the rebuilding of its Sandy-ravaged boardwalk. Eight days after Point Beach officials at a council meeting bemoaned the lack of cash flowing from FEMA, FEMA made its announcement. On Wednesday afternoon, U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Menendez (both D-NJ) today announced that Point Pleasant Beach will receive more than $2.1 million to reimburse the town for the cost of repairing and rebuilding the boardwalk. The allocation reimburses the town for 75 percent of its written request to FEMA for the cost of the boardwalk repairs and rebuilding, said Point Beach Business …

Beach Sweeps collects garbage and more in Boro and Beach
A message in a bottle, a plastic bottle filled with sand, a flip flop, building materials, dog poop and lots of plastic were among the items found on the sand in Point Beach and Point Borough on Saturday. Skyler Kummer, 8, a Point Borough resident, found a message in a bottle during the Saturday morning Beach Sweeps at Maxson Avenue beach in the Borough. The message was sent on Oct. 9, 2012 by Robert Peters from a Spring Lake beach. Skyler notified Peters of the find and he said he had been hoping it would be found in South Africa rather than so close to home. "Skyler is very happy with her find," said Beth Degen, her mother. The message said: "This message was sent from the beach in Spring lake, NJ. Date sent: 10-9-12. Mail back with …

Point Beach council votes to borrow $8 million to pay for Sandy clean-up and renovations
So far, FEMA has paid nothing in reimbursement to Point Pleasant Beach for the millions it's paid to clean up and rebuild after Sandy. And the town is getting no explanation. "Only that it takes time," said Point Beach Business Administrator Chris Riehl wearily, after Tuesday night's council meeting. "It's frustrating because we have to keep borrowing money to pay for Sandy expenses." Point Beach council voted unanimously at its meeting at Borough Hall on Tuesday night to borrow about $8 million in bond anticipation notes to cover Sandy-related expenses because they have not been reimbursed by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). Council member Bill Mayer, chairman of the finance committee, noted that the double whammy of getting …

Unwanted or old prescription medications can be dropped off at the Point Beach police department lobby at Borough Hall on New Jersey Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. It's part of the national "Operation Take Back" program designed to get prescription medications out of homes and disposed of safely. The US Department of Justice's Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) holds the event annually. "Most abused prescription drugs come from family and friends," according to a prepared statement from the DEA. "You could be a drug dealer and not even know it." The DEA information also states: "Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold. Unused drugs that are flushed contaminate the water …
