Governing body unanimously passes resolution calling for state, Congressional reps to disallow practice
Point Borough has aligned itself with opponents of a controversial technique to extract natural gas that some say threatens drinking water. The Borough Council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday to urge a federal ban on hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," a process by which chemical-laden water is injected into wells at high pressure to force the fracturing of underground rock in an attempt to extract resources such as natural gas. The resolution urges the state Legislature to ban the practice in New Jersey while asking Congressional representatives to consider banning the process outright. "We realize the process ends up with wastewater," Mayor William Schroeder said. "What good is drinking water if it contains cancer-causing …

Council unanimously amends animal control law in response to shuttered Brick pet store
Retailers are banned from selling dogs and cats within Point Borough under the terms of an ordinance unanimously adopted Tuesday night. The Borough Council amended its animal control code at its regular meeting to prevent stores from selling the pets after public outcry over a store in Brick that was shut down after authorities found a majority of its dogs to be in poor health. "This is a step in the right direction," Councilman Chris Leitner said. The amended code states that no pet store will "sell, deliver, offer for sale, barter, auction or otherwise improperly dispose of cats or dogs in the Borough of Point Pleasant. "The Borough of Point Pleasant has a local responsibility to promote animal welfare and encourage best practices in the…

Our beautiful beaches are turning into garbage bins
So last night - and what a beautiful summer night it was - a friend and I decided to take my little one up to the beach to look for some sea glass. It was about 7:30 p.m., so the temperature was just right. The humidity gone, and the moon was out. It was just about as perfect a night as one could hope for. Living in Point Pleasant for almost my whole life, you'd think that I would tire of the sight we all see as we pass the dunes and head towards the water. That massive, beautiful ocean, and the smooth sand with the gulls flying over us, is just breathtaking every time. I really know how lucky we are to live so close to such natural beauty. Which is probably why it bothers me so to see such massive amounts of trash just about everywhere. …

Council says more than $300,000 not recorded properly in 2010 books

Point Pleasant Borough doesn't know how much cash it has since last year's financial records didn't account for at least $341,000 in possible revenue and expenses, council members say. "The financial statements in 2010 are worthless," said Chris Leitner, Point Pleasant Borough councilman. Leitner, speaking at council's Tuesday meeting, said the number could be higher, and that the borough has no idea how much of that money should be listed as expenses or identified as revenues. Point Boro officials said they expect that the poor accounting will not have an impact on the $23 million municipal budget and the local tax rate. "We're not missing $341,000 — we just don't know where it fits within the framework," he said. The council has agreed …

The big day
It was so freezing cold, walking those two blocks to Sloan. But I don't really remember feeling it. I was so drained emotionally and and physically. I was just numb, and wanted to just get there and get this nightmare over and done with. So in we walked: me, my husband and Naomi. The check-in at the desk, at 4:30 a.m., seemed so insanely ordinary, like I was there to get my nails done or something. "Your name?" she asked me. "Lauren Roselle." "And you are here for?" "Oh, just a little brain surgery. Thanks." Just get me upstairs and be done with it - that's what I was thinking. But everything took time. Nothing went quickly. Then the paperwork started again. Eighteen forms of check-this, initial-that. Are you allergic to any medication? …

Another visit to the doctor; another angel
The days and weeks leading up to my brain surgery were really a blur. I was numb most of the time. How is one supposed to feel, knowing in a few short weeks they could be doing something that could result in so many bad things? I really didn't venture too far to the bad side. I just couldn't. I can't remember much about what happened on Christmas that year, in 2007. I'm an artist, so I do remember painting a bunch of signs for my family members who gather at my wonderful cousin's house every Christmas Eve. We all grew up together, and to this day, we remain very close. I needed to let them all know just how much my aunts, uncles, cousins, sister and brother all meant to me. Each of them received a sign I painted that simply said, "Family…

It's nice to stop and see the snow
I love snow. For me, the more, the better. Just before it starts to snow, the air takes on that unique quality, where you can feel, actually smell, it coming. I love watching the flakes descend, especially the big fluffy ones, the ones that make you feel like you’re inside a snow globe. I love the way the evergreen boughs bend under the weight of the white stuff, how the leafless, deciduous trees' branches glisten. I love the appearance of perfection of an expanse of virgin snow, before a single footprint taints it. I love the feel of the flakes hitting my face, forcing my eyes to squint. It makes me feel like a little kid. I just love it. But as much as the aesthetics appeal to me, I recently realized that what I love most about …

Snow causes cancellations in both districts
Schools in Point Pleasant Borough and Point Pleasant Beach will be closed Thursday, as local and state police urge residents to stay off the roads. Plows were out working early Thursday morning as school and local officials used automated phone systems, school web sites and announcements on radio stations to let residents know schools are closed and to urge them to keep their cars off the streets. Trash and recycling pickups are on normal schedule in both boroughs. State police are reporting that state offices are opening at noon today. State police are also urging drivers to stay home if they can. "If you must drive, be prepared for a long commute and take your emergency kit with you," said Acting State Police Lieutenant Stephen Jones in …

State of the State address today pledges comprehensive tax reform as part of budget proposal
Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday called for eliminating teacher tenure, reforming the state pension and benefit systems and cutting spending. In his State of the State address, the governor outlined the state's fiscal problems and long-term debt that he plans to address not through tax increases but through decreased spending. “We have to continue to make some very tough decisions about what we can afford — and what we can’t,” he said. In education, Christie said, the state must cut out-of-classroom costs and focus more on teacher-and-student performance. He said layoffs should be merit-based, noting that teaching "can no longer be the only profession where you have no rewards for excellence and no consequences for failure to perform." "Let …
