Point Borough Council hears how roads supervisor put a front loader to work to help borough residents escape Sandy's flooding
As the borough's firefighters, first aid volunteers and police officers worked their way through the wee hours of the night, rescuing Point Borough residents in the first hours after Hurricane Sandy made landfall, there was an unlikely rescuer at work. Rolling into some of the hardest hit areas of the borough, where the water was in some cases 5 feet deep or more, Jude Walker plucked residents from their flooded homes … in the borough's front loader. “Some climbed into the bucket from their front doors, some climbed through the windows of their houses,” Walker said. One family was rescued from their home’s second-floor balcony. Walker shared his story at the Point Borough Council meeting Tuesday night, as the council discussed the …

Enforceability, scope of coverage debated
A proposed ordinance that would ban smoking on borough-owned property remains under discussion, after Point Borough Council agreed to postpone action while councilmembers looked further into the topic. During the council's workshop session Tuesday night, Councilmember Christopher Goss said the main point of the ordinance is to give the borough the ability to address a nuisance behavior. But the remainder of the council and Mayor William Schroeder raised concerns about everything from the scope of covered properties to the extent of penalties and the potential burden it would create on the borough's municipal court. Council President Antoinette DePaola said her biggest concern was the impact of the ordinance, as drafted, on the borough's …

Bill Borowsky is running for election to the council this fall
Bill Borowsky, who is running for the Point Pleasant Borough Council in this November's election, was appointed last night to fill the unexpired term of Mitchell Remig. Remig, 23, resigned as of June 30 to take a job in the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, after serving the borough as one of the youngest elected officials in the state. The council accepted Remig's letter of resignation last night with regret, with all the council members praising his service. Remig's term was due to expire at the end of this year, and he had announced before his hiring by the the prosecutor's office that he was not planning to seek re-election in order to spend more time on his college studies and planning his career. "He's a very ambitious young man," …

An anticipated $500,000 deficit in the 2012 water and sewer budget forces council's hand, council members say
Anticipating a deficit of $500,000 in the borough's water and sewer department, the Point Pleasant Borough Council agreed to reinstate a surcharge on all water and sewer users in the borough. While no formal action was taken Tuesday night during a special budget workshop meeting, the council members agreed in principle to have Borough Administrator David Maffei add the surcharge into the budget figures he was to send to the borough auditor Wednesday morning so a proposed budget can be readied for introduction on Monday. Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Borough Hall. Closing the deficit in the water and sewer budget was the major sticking point in the discussions Tuesday night. Part of the deficit results from an increase in the …

Hired in March 2011 part-time, she says her Borough job combined with Mantoloking full-time job has become too much
A little more than a year after she was hired to help Point Borough sort out its financial mess, Michelle A. Swisher is resigning as the town’s part-time chief financial officer. Swisher’s letter of resignation was accepted by the Borough Council at its meeting on Tuesday night, though not unanimously, as the vote was split 4-2 along party lines. Democrats Christopher Leitner and Christopher Goss voted no. Swisher also is the full-time tax collector and chief financial officer for Mantoloking. In a telephone interiew on Wednesday morning, Swisher said she is staying at the job in Point until a replacement is found. She said she is resigning from Point Borough because working there combined with working full-time in Mantoloking has simply …
Grant-funded projects expected to save Point Borough nearly $12,000
At a time when every penny counts, Point Borough has been making strides in energy efficiency that not only have cost the town and its taxpayers nothing, but are projected to save the town nearly $12,000 per year, according to one councilman. Councilman Christopher Leitner said efforts of the Climate Action Committee have helped bring in grants to do energy efficiency projects at the public works department, at Borough Hall and at the recreation department that are expected to save the town $11,737 in energy costs. Even better, he said, the improvements, worth $89,838, have cost the borough and its taxpayers nothing. “The parts of this group are each so hard-working, so exceptional, so committed to this borough,” Leitner said. They are the…

But Jerry Dasti's experience makes him worth it, says GOP
Jerry Dasti, the new Point Borough attorney, is charging thousands more than the quote from last year's attorney, but he's worth it because he has more Borough and municipal experience, said Republican council members. "Jerry Dasti is the best attorney for the town," said Republican councilman Robert Sabosik. "I have nothing but the best interests of the town at heart. We're not doing anything political." Dasti, of the firm of Dasti, Murphy, McGuckin Ulaky, Cherkos and Connors, based in Lacey Township, will be paid a maximum of $79,850 for February through December, according to a copy of his contract. Dasti's original quote was a maximum of $93,500 for 12 months. Dasti said in an interview last week that the fee of $79,850 will include …

Republicans say that now they will renegotiate with Jerry Dasti to determine rate
As expected, the Point Pleasant Borough Council approved the appointment of Jerry Dasti to the post of borough attorney once again on Tuesday night during an at-times contentious meeting. However, Republican council members who voted for Dasti to return to the borough in his former role say they do not know exactly how much he will charge, but they will renegotiate with him and let the public know the rate later. The council voted along party lines on Dasti's appointment and the appointments of municipal auditor, conflict attorney, conflict municipal engineer and municipal auditor, with Council President Antoinette DePaola and Councilmen Mitch Remig, Robert Sabosik and John Wisniewski voting in favor and Councilmen Christopher Leitner and …
