Point Beach council votes to borrow $8 million to pay for Sandy clean-up and renovations
So far, FEMA has paid nothing in reimbursement to Point Pleasant Beach for the millions it's paid to clean up and rebuild after Sandy. And the town is getting no explanation. "Only that it takes time," said Point Beach Business Administrator Chris Riehl wearily, after Tuesday night's council meeting. "It's frustrating because we have to keep borrowing money to pay for Sandy expenses." Point Beach council voted unanimously at its meeting at Borough Hall on Tuesday night to borrow about $8 million in bond anticipation notes to cover Sandy-related expenses because they have not been reimbursed by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). Council member Bill Mayer, chairman of the finance committee, noted that the double whammy of getting …

Old prescription medication can be dropped off in the police lobby from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Unwanted or old prescription medications can be dropped off at the Point Beach police department lobby at Borough Hall on New Jersey Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. It's part of the national "Operation Take Back" program designed to get prescription medications out of homes and disposed of safely. The US Department of Justice's Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) holds the event annually. "Most abused prescription drugs come from family and friends," according to a prepared statement from the DEA. "You could be a drug dealer and not even know it." The DEA information also states: "Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold. Unused drugs that are flushed contaminate the water …

Bridge between Point Beach and Brielle to remain passable
You'll be able to keep crossing the Route 35 bridge when you come to it. It's been passable since mid-afternoon Wednesday and it looks like it will stay that way. The state says the testing on the bridge is finished, which is good news for those who sat in traffic Wednesday as the bridge was intermittently in the raised position. Contractor crews left the bridge shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday and will not need to return. Contractors for the state Department of Transportation (DOT) were testing the locking mechanisms on the bridge, they ran two or three tests and they were just fine, said DOT spokesman Timothy Greeley on Thursday. "They do not have anything further planned," Greeley said. Acknowledging that not getting the word out to the…
A questionable phone call prompted a search, but it was all clear
Police are patrolling the G. Harold Antrim Elementary School today and continuing to investigate a call that had prompted them to search the school on Wednesday, said Point Beach Police Chief Kevin O'Hara on Thursday morning. The school was searched after students had been dismissed on Wednesday afternoon, nothing was found and there was no incident, said O'Hara. He added that the investigation is ongoing and police are not yet disclosing the exact wording of the call left as a recorded message on the school's attendance line. "The message was not specific as to any threat, it was a four or five word message," O'Hara said. "The message was very vague and there are different ways to interpret it. But the school administration and …

But state DOT may be doing work again Thurs. or Fri.
The Route 35 bridge, between Point Pleasant Beach and Brielle, is now passable again, but might be up again tomorrow. Contractors for the state Department of Transportation (DOT) have finished work for the day, but may need to do additional work Thursday, possibly even Friday, said Timothy Greeley, a DOT spokesperson. If there is more work to be done, necessitating keeping the bridge in the raised position, it will be done only between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Greeley said. The bridge was kept in the raised position for hours earlier today, causing a major traffic-back up this morning. On Wednesday afternoon, Greeley, in response to Patch's questions about the bridge, wrote in an email: "Our guys are doing some maintenance testing of the Route…

Funds will help house volunteers helping Sandy victims
New Jersey First Lady Mary Pat Christie announced on Monday morning that the Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund is donating $31,300 to help Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church renovate facilities for out-of-town volunteers helping Sandy victims. This grant will be used to improve the church's Volunteer Village dormitory facilities, which house 36 volunteers per week and supply non-profits with volunteer labor for local home rebuilding. Christie toured the church's dormitory facilities, including bunk beds with mattresses donated by the US Army, bathrooms and a stage area where showers and dressing rooms will be constructed. The donation from the relief fund overseen by Christie will help renovate bathrooms, buy tools and convert a garage into…

Show MSNBC-TV's Morning Joe on Monday morning at Seaside Hts. Bring signs! Speak out! 1000s of NJ homes may be abandoned or foreclosed because of FEMA's bail-out through astronomical flood insurance rates. It's expanding the flood zones (based on fuzzy math) to take in more "customers" afraid of the next 500-year storm. It's using scare tactics with the extra-high house-elevation mandates, all to…   more ›
