Schrader Set for Return to Australian Courts

Point Boro native ready to continue professional career

Since graduating from Point Boro High School, Abby Schrader's basketball career has taken her from the University of Maine to professional teams all around the world.  This week, Schrader returned to the courts in Australia after signing a contract with the Geelong Supercats of the South East Australian Basketball League according to a statement on the team's website. In a statement on the website, Schrader said she is looking forward to continuing to play at a high level down under. "I'm really excited to get back and spend time with the girls, on and off the court - especially getting to know the new players," she said.  Schrader also played with the Supercats last year when she averaged 12.4 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game. Point Boro HS Student and Teacher Help Sandy-Displaced Families

Boro High School senior, teacher, and local business join forces to create T-shirt to raise funds for families

One of the many stories of neighbor helping neighbor after Superstorm Sandy comes from Point Borough High School, where a student and a teacher designed and sold T-shirts to help Borough residents. Senior Raelynn Ridarick and Physical Education teacher Christopher Ferrone designed a T-shirt, sold more than 150 to Borough High School students and gave the proceeds to 12 local, displaced families. "We had a cost of $6 per T-shirt and we sold them for $15 so we made a $9 profit on each shirt," Ferrone said. "We sold over 150 shirts for a profit of a little over $1,400. That money was donated in the form of gift cards for Lowes, Home Depot, etc." Ridarick said, “My main reason for creating the shirts was to be able to make a big impact on …

Hurricane Sandy

Legislative, Local Officials Seek to Get 'Out in Front' of Sandy Recovery

State agencies, legislators, local officials attend special hearing in Wall

Municipalities throughout the region are looking for answers about how to deal with the lasting impact of superstorm Sandy. State Sen. Robert Singer and Assemblyman Sean Kean (both R-30) provided an opportunity Thursday night for residents to hear directly from relevant agencies at a special hearing attended by local officials at the Wall Municipal Complex. Representatives from FEMA, the Department of Banking and Insurance, the Small Business Administration and others answered questions on topics ranging from how shore towns can rebuild their boardwalks to how more inland towns can afford to clear tons of trees and debris from their roadways. "We really had a concentrated few towns that were impacted to the level where they need to avail …

I say, let's stage a protest against JCP&L. I know at least 5000 of my immediate neighbors who'd be there. Our goal? Move the GD Substation up the hill! I swear to god. I'm gonna have T-shirts made!   more ›

Point Boro First Aid Squad Holds Coin Toss

Squad members hit the streets Aug. 25 to raise funds.

Members of the Point Boro First Aid Squad will hold a coin toss on Aug. 25 at Beaver Dam Road and Bridge Avenue, where they will collect donations from passing drivers. The squad is a volunteer organization that responds to medical emergencies and relies on donations to keep operating. Money collected at the coin toss will be used to purchase much-needed equipment and supplies, provide training for new first aid squad members and maintain vehicles and equipment. “If we didn’t exist,” Squad Captain Andy Welsh explained, “the town would have to go with a paid first aid squad or a private ambulance company." “And property taxes would be a lot higher,” noted Squad President Vincent Wardell. The squad sorely needs new members and, for high …

Great group of people! Very proud of them all. My son is on the First Aid, inactive now as he serves our country in the Navy, but what he has learned being a certified EMT and starting out as a cadet has given him knowledge and insight and has helped him become a Hospital Corpsman. Thank you all for your service! Diana Downs Skerletts   more ›

Santa Was at Point Boro's Bennett Cabin Again on Sunday

Santa returned to Riverfront Park, after delighting visitors on Saturday

The only thing better than Santa Claus visiting a log cabin in Point Borough once is Santa visiting twice. And that's exactly what happened from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday when Santa again greeted visitors at the historic Bennett Log Cabin at Riverfront Park at River Road and Maxson Avenue. On Saturday, Santa had numerous visitors of all ages at the historic cabin, which volunteers had decked out in holiday splendor inside and out. Some wanted to sit on his lap and tell him what they want to see under the Christmas tree and in their stockings Christmas morning, as their parents snapped photos. Some wanted one of the candy canes he was handing out. Some wanted to gaze at his fluffy white beard or just touch him. But one boy had his mind on …
