Environmentalists call for rebuilding that protects the environment and strengthens communities
Retreating from areas that consistently flood, improving sewer systems so they are less prone to overflowing and creating better wastewater management systems are just a few steps that have to be taken to make the Jersey Shore's post-Sandy rebuilding process more environmentally safe, said environmentalists on Thursday. Officials from leading New Jersey environmental organizations discussed the importance of taking these measures and many others as part of a teleconference on Thursday when they laid out what the state's guiding principles should be as it moves through recovery and rebuilding. American Littoral Society’s Tim Dillingham said, “These principles if followed by state, local and private decision makers will result in a restored …

Another summer has come and gone, filled with days of laughter, sunshine and relaxation at the beach. While the parties have gone, the reminders of them -- caps from water bottles and soda, straws from drinks, and hundreds of other bits of debris -- remain behind. This Saturday, hundreds of volunteers will be hitting the state's beaches from Sandy Hook to Cape May to pick up plastics, Styrofoam, cans and much more, left behind by humans and the tides, as part of Clean Ocean Action's fall Beach Sweeps event. In the Point area, the Sweeps will be done at four sites: Point Pleasant Beach: Jenkinson's Aquarium on the Boardwalk and the Maryland Avenue beach on the south end next to Bay Head In Point Pleasant Borough: Maxson Avenue and River …

Praise and criticism for Gov. Chris Christie's ten point plan to revitalize Barnegat Bay came from many of the same people Thursday, as state officials touted historic measures to restore the estuary and local activists said even more should be done. It's been about a year since Christie announced his plan, which includes measures ranging from an early closure of the Oyster Creek Generating Station to lawn fertilizer regulations. Since then, the state has committed millions of dollars and plenty of attention to the matter, said state DEP Commissioner Bob Martin, who gave a one-year update on the plan at the Joseph A. Citta Scout Reservation in Waretown. So far, Martin said, work on the plan has included reaching a deal with Exelon Nuclear …

Group also recognized for fighting pollution, and doing dune grass planting and beach cleanups
Fighting for greater beach access all over the Jersey Shore, battling ocean and bay pollution, planting dune grass and providing free beach wheelchairs are just a few of the things CRAB was honored for by the Point Pleasant Beach Mayor and Council. Citizens' Right to Access Beaches (CRAB) received a Mayor's Proclamation at Tuesday night's Point Pleasant Beach council meeting. Councilwoman Kristine Tooker read and presented the proclamation, saying it was "overdue." "You've done so much and we never thanked you," Tooker said. "I'm sorry we didn't give you this a lot sooner." A small group of members of the all-volunteer organization were there to receive the plaque including Fay Jaworovich, the wife of the late Nick Jaworovich, one of the …
