Team captain meeting tonight
Participants in Relay for Life at Point Borough High School on Saturday are asking their friends and neighbors to support their efforts to fight cancer. The fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. Sat. at the high school stadium field. It will not continue as an overnight event as did last year's fundraiser held at Community Park. The event, like last year's, is expected to draw hundreds of participants and supporters. As planning continues, there is a captain's meeting tonight (see attached PDF for details). American Cancer Society fundraiser draws crowd of at least 500 to Community Park
What would make a 17-year-old girl in Point Pleasant Borough get nine inches of her beautiful hair cut off five days before junior prom? "I'm doing it in honor of Jordan," said Jaime Williams, referring to Jordan Calabrese, a Point Borough High School senior who authorities say died of natural causes shortly after arriving at a party in Point Beach last November. Friends have said she had cancer. "She was one of my best friends," Jaime said. "I want to do this for her." The haircut involved Jaime and a number of other girls donating their hair to be made into free wigs for cancer patients, just one of many activities taking place at the third annual Relay for Life at Community Park on Saturday night. Event in Community Park from Sat. afternoon through Sun.
A Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will be held from early Saturday evening through Sunday morning at Community Park in Point Borough. The event in the park on Bridge Avenue will feature an opening ceremony, a survivor reception for cancer survivors and their guests, a luminaria ceremony and a closing ceremony at 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Survivors are welcome to attend the Survivor Reception that begins at 5:30 p.m., even if they have not registered yet and just walk into the event tomorrow, said Katrina Salvatoriello, chair of the Point Borough Relay for Life and a Point Borough High School Math teacher. Donations still welcome
The American Cancer Society "Relay for Life" at Community Park on June 11th raised $25,000, involved 55 teams and more than 450 participants, according to Bradley Bennett, the American Cancer Society staff partner. The proceeds will help with research, education, advocacy and patient services, according to Bennett. The top six fundraising teams are Team McCarthy with $3,607, Memorial Middle School with $3,492 combined over two teams, Q Family and Friends with $2,872, Carnies for Hope with $2,501, Scouting for a Cure with $2,113 and Carly's Angels with $1,923.
