'This Old House' Featuring a Point Boro House and Others

PBS show about renovating and elevating Sandy-flooded homes

An eight-episode series of 'This Old House' focuses on several local homes rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy. The PBS' show will first air in October. PBS announced the show worked on an 1880s cottage in Bay Head, a 1950s Colonial in Point Pleasant, and a prefabricated new house in Manasquan. Side stories will also feature restoration projects in Mantoloking, Long Beach Island, and Ocean Grove and other local projects along the beach and the bay. Here is the complete announcement from the show producers: Months after Superstorm Sandy devastated shorelines on the East Coast, affected homeowners are still determining how to rebuild in a landscape of provisional FEMA regulations, delayed building permits and continued weather risks. NJ First Lady's Fund Donates $31,300 to Church in Point Beach

Funds will help house volunteers helping Sandy victims

New Jersey First Lady Mary Pat Christie announced on Monday morning that the Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund is donating $31,300 to help Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church renovate facilities for out-of-town volunteers helping Sandy victims. This grant will be used to improve the church's Volunteer Village dormitory facilities, which house 36 volunteers per week and supply non-profits with volunteer labor for local home rebuilding. Christie toured the church's dormitory facilities, including bunk beds with mattresses donated by the US Army, bathrooms and a stage area where showers and dressing rooms will be constructed. The donation from the relief fund overseen by Christie will help renovate bathrooms, buy tools and convert a garage into…

Hey, God bless these folks, I'm sure their all doing a great job and we all thank them for their time and efforts. However, $31,000 doesn't really account for anything when you think about all the moneys donated and supposedly to be given to the flood victims. I'm a BIG Chris Christy fan, but come on gov. We got a lot of people that really need the help.   more ›

Point Boro Residents Frustrated at FEMA Meeting

NJ Natural Gas offering higher rebates to Sandy-flooded residents

It was bad enough that Superstorm Sandy flooded Jim Reilly's Point Borough home, forcing him and his wife to live elsewhere. But then came FEMA's flood maps, putting his house in the flood zone with the toughest building restrictions, with pressure on the towns and the state to accept them. "It's blackmail," Reilly said, outside a FEMA meeting at Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School in Point Borough on Wednesday night. "I'm appalled that the town and the state adopted the flood maps and it's because they were being blackmailed by FEMA, because FEMA said, 'Adopt this or we won't give you money.' And you can quote me on that!" Reilly, who lives on Center Street in Sunshine Harbor, had been in an "A5 zone," but is now in a "V10 zone," …

No, you should be eligible for ICC because you are NOW not in compliance with the advisory flood maps released this past December. Please apply for ICC, if you have not already. Good luck, Eric. Please keep in touch with me at denise.distephan@patch.com and let me know how it works out.   more ›

I must say one thing. Since Brick Library has been closed for the renovations, I have been behind some Brick residents in line at the Point Boro Library. Every single one of them has said how much better they like Point and intend to continue to go there even after the opening. That says it all about how great our library and its people are. OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!   more ›

'A World Away, Close to Home:' A Tour of the New Brick Library

Renovated Brick branch of the Ocean County Library will have a grand re-opening on Saturday

From the outside, the brick front of the Ocean County Library branch on Brick Township's busy Chambersbridge Road suggests a simple building where you can pick up books, access computers or bring children for stories. But as you step through the sliding glass doors into the library's entryway, you're greeted with a view that draws you into a world of calm, a place where you can get a respite from the hubbub of the life whizzing past on the road outside. As workers were putting the finishing touches on what has been a five-month renovation of the Brick branch, Susan Quinn, director of the Ocean County Library system, gave Patch a tour of the branch and showed off what she and others hope will be an inviting and useful place for the …

I Need My Penguin Space!

Jenkinson's Aquarium's new penguin exhibit is nearly five times larger than old one

Penguins need their space too and now they have nearly five times as much at Jenkinson's Aquarium. Jenkinson's recently completed a renovation and expansion of the penguin exhibit at the aquarium on the boardwalk, the first major renovation since the aquarium opened in 1991, said Aquarium Director Cindy Claus. Claus, who has worked at the aquarium for 21 years, having started as a curator, said the square footage has increased from 119 to 500 and the pool space has been increased from 1,100 gallons to 4,200. How did the aquarium make more room for the penguins and their pool? "We moved all of the life support into the basement," Claus explained. The "life support" includes machinery that creates ultra-violet light, keeps air and water cold…
