Center section of boardwalk slated for work after the summer may be replaced with wood, not rebuilt with Trex
The "plaza" section of the boardwalk, from Arnold Avenue to Jenkinson's Aquarium, might be rebuilt with wood, not with Trex. There was discussion at Tuesday night's Point Beach Council meeting about rebuilding the plaza section with wood, not Trex, the plastic material that is being used to replace the sections of the boardwalk which were damaged by Tropical Storm Irene or Superstorm Sandy. But there was a general consensus at the meeting at Borough Hall that that decision won't be made until council gets additional information from Borough Engineer Ray Savacool. Based on information from Savacool so far, it appears that removing and replacing the boards in the plaza section with wood boards would cost about $280,000 and rebuilding with …

A contract is awarded to fix a section damaged by Irene as engineer prepares for the bigger job brought on by Sandy
Point Pleasant Beach Council awarded a contract to fix a section of boardwalk damaged in Tropical Storm Irene last year and authorized the municipal engineer to prepare bid specs for reconstruction of Sandy-battered sections of boardwalk. The council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to award a contract to Albert Marine for $290,210 to fix the stretch of boardwalk in front of Lucky's Arcade. That section, north of the southerly section of Trenton Avenue and the Boardwalk, was damaged when Irene hit Point Beach in August 2011. The section was still functional and did not have to be closed off. Point Beach Business Administrator Christine Riehl said on Thursday afternoon, "We have not established a start date, but it will be sometime in …

Repair work will be complete
Mistletoe Avenue in Point Borough is re-opening Tuesday morning, after public works crews finish road resurfacing necessitated by the repair of a broken drainage pipe, according to Point Borough Public Works. Mistletoe had been closed in both directions between Riverwood Ave and Oak Terrace part of Thursday into Friday because an old, rotted drainage pipe collapsed and had to be replaced. The road was closed on Monday so crews could lay the final layer of black coat.

A broken drainage pipe had to be replaced
Mistletoe Avenue is re-opening Friday afternoon, but will close again on Monday for road resurfacing necessitated by repair to a broken drainage pipe, according to Point Borough Public Works. Mistletoe has been closed in both directions between Riverwood Ave and Oak Terrace part of Thursday into Friday because an old, rotted drainage pipe collapsed and had to be replaced, said Michael Pizzi, Public Works Water and Sewer Supervisor on Friday afternoon. The road will be closed for most of the day on Monday so crews can lay the final layer of black coat, which will finish the job, and then the road will be re-opened, Pizzi said. He said earlier reports that there had been a water main break on the road were actually incorrect.

Progress expected to continue shortly on south end of boardwalk
Point Beach is hoping for a shipment of boardwalk materials shortly so that progress can continue on rebuilding the boardwalk between New Jersey and Atlantic avenues. The boardwalk had been damaged in the storm in August that was initially referred to as "Hurricane Irene," although meterologists later said that when Irene hit New Jersey, it was a tropical storm and not a hurricane. The former boardwalk has been removed and a new foundation has been constructed. Progess on rebuilding a section towards the south end recently hit a snag when stringers, or the support system for the deck, were rejected as substandard by the contractor and sent back to the mill, said Point Beach Business Administrator Chris Riehl. "Better to be done correctly…

Ok, not sure if everyone is aware of this but Trex has only been around since 1999, so I'm not sure where the "proof" is that it will be able to perform for 25 years. In fact, they only provide a limited 10 year warranty on the product for commercial use and in 2009 they lost a class action suit because it was breaking down. Add in the sun, salt and traffic of the PP BW and you may not even make …   more ›
