As municipalities continue to find ways to upgrade their websites to meet the requirements for the Governor's Best Standards Checklist, towns now know where they stand in the state among other municipal websites. According to a Monmouth University poll ranking 540 municipal websites in the state, Middletown, out of Monmouth County, ranks first and Tavistock Borough, Camden County, ranks 540th. Point Borough ranks at 134 and Point Beach ranks 149. Franklin Lakes Borough, out of Bergen County, was second and West Windsor Township, from Mercer County, was third. Galloway Township ranked 312. Point Beach Revised Parking Plan Approved

Plan will be in effect from 12:30 to 4 a.m. during summer in sections of Districts 3 and 4

A revised overnight, summer parking plan for sections of Districts 3 and 4 was approved 4 to 3 by Point Beach Council on Tuesday night. Council members Stephen Reid, Andy Cortes and William Mayer voted against the parking plan, saying they do not want it to include any section of District 3. Council members Kristine Tooker, Michael Corbally and Bret Gordon voted for it, followed by Mayor Vincent Barrella voting for it, breaking the tie. Barrella said last summer's parking plan helped reduce noise, trash and disorderly conduct in the late night and early morning hours in District 4. "Other than the politics of it, I don't know why anyone would vote against this, so I vote yes," he said. There is a provision in the new ordinance, as with …

UPDATE: Route 35 in Mantoloking is Re-opened

An ocean breach had forced a closure from Herbert Street to the Bay Head/Mantoloking border.

Route 35, from Herbert Street to the Bay Head/Mantoloking border, is re-opened, according to the Mantoloking police department. That section of the state highway that had been compromised by an ocean breach in the wee hours of Thursday morning opened up around 11:05 or 11:10 a.m. today, police said. The Ocean County Road Department and the municipality's emergency contractor, RWV Land & Livestock, will haul sand all day from the state Department of Transportation site in Wall, according to the Mantoloking Office of Emergency Management's Facebook page. "Please use caution when driving around town as sections of East Avenue and Barnegat Lane are still covered with sand and debris," the Facebook post says. The town remains open to …

Letters to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Point Beach Police Chief Thanks Community

Kevin O'Hara thanks staff, volunteers and "neighbors helping neighbors"

An Open Letter of Thanks to All Who Helped During Hurricane Sandy As I sit here writing this letter it has been three weeks to the day that “Sandy” impacted all of our lives.  Thanksgiving is now only a few days away, when “Sandy” came we were waiting for Halloween’s arrival.  In one sense it seems like only yesterday that “Sandy” was beating on our door step and in another it seems like months ago. The past three and a half weeks or so seem like a blur, like a bad dream.  It is impossible to convey in words my true feelings of thanks to all those who pitched in during such a trying time, so many who stood tall in the face of adversity and did all they could to try to make all of our lives move forward as smoothly as possible.  I’ll try…

Residents Can Return to Homes in Point Beach

Officials announced on Wednesday afternoon that residents, property owners and business owners can check their properties

Residents, business owners and operators of properties owned and leased in Point Beach are now allowed to go back to their properties. The town lifted the mandatory evacuation order east of the NJ Transit train tracks at 4 p.m. Wednesday. However, police and government officials are urging extreme caution. "Residents and business owners and operators are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution," a prepared statement says. "In many cases, structures in Point Pleasant Beach may not be in a safe condition and the permission to access those properties should not be construed in any way as a representation of the condition of the property." "Also, as of the time of this announcement, there is no electrical service in the town and no …

IRENE, ONE YEAR LATER: Storm Prompts JCP&L to Improve Outage Reporting System

Residents can now report home and street light outages on website

After Irene was finally done flooding roads and knocking out power a year ago, it pushed Jersey Central Power & Light to make it easier for residents to report outages. The company now allows customers to report home and street light outages at its 24/7 Power Center on the company website, which can also be accessed through smart phones when outages leave residents without computer access, said Pete Johner, area manager for JCP&L customer and community relations in Central New Jersey. "After Irene, there were a lot of issues with communication with this company," Johner said in a telephone interview on Wednesday. "So we've made a lot of communication changes. We enhanced the website, we have toll-free phone numbers in an electronic …

Court Appearance Nixed for District 4 Parking Tickets

Fine now set at $48

District 4 parking plan tickets no longer require a court appearance and now cost $48, according to two Point Beach council members. The tickets can now be paid by mail or online, only requiring a mandatory court appearance for those pleading not guilty, wrote Point Beach Councilmember Michael Corbally in Patch Comments on Monday. "Letters will go out this week for folks who have received tickets prior to today," Corbally wrote. "Sorry for the confusion." Corbally could not be reached to elaborate. However, Councilmember Kristine Tooker, when reached by telephone on Monday evening, said she, other council members and police officials had received an email on Monday afternoon that the mandatory court appearance had been eliminated. …

Judge: Point Beach Parking Plan Can Continue For Now

Judge Grasso denies motion for injunction filed by marina, charter boats and GOP officials

A Superior Court judge ruled Friday afternoon that Point Beach can continue operating its new District 4 parking plan for now, denying a motion filed by a group suing the town. State Superior Court Assignment Judge Vincent Grasso, sitting in Toms River, denied a request by a group of commercial charter boats, a marina and a small group of residents for an injunction to block the parking plan which restricts parking from midnight to 6 a.m. on municipal roads in District 4, said Municipal Attorney Sean Gertner. The group is suing the town to block the parking plan. Councilmember Kris Tooker, who was in Grasso's courtroom with some other municipal officials, said she was glad to hear the decision. "I feel that we finally had a fair chance!" …
