The Associated Humane Societies is promoting Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month
Popcorn Park will be receiving a large group of furry guests this weekend. Twenty-three chihuahuas will arrive at Robert Miller Airpark in Berkeley Township on Sunday. The little dogs are being transported from Gates, N.C. by Pilot-N-Paws, an organization that transfers rescue animals to shelters and foster homes. “Chihuahua Rescue and Transport, Inc. contacted Associated Humane Societies to help with a sad situation,” Renee Szorosy said. A North Carolina “animal lover” and her husband were caring for 32 Chihuahuas when the wife unexpectedly passed away, leaving her husband to care for these dogs all alone, she said. The deceased woman’s sister, a New Jersey resident, found homes for some of the dogs. She then reached off to Chihuahua …

It might be the last day of the 2012 Ocean County Fair, but there's still plenty to do on the shortened schedule slated for today. Some of the highlights include a kid's pudding eating contest and the women's cast iron skillet toss. As you walk onto the grounds at the Robert J. Miller Airpark during the Ocean County Fair, you get a sense that this is what summer is all about. The sound of carnival rides and the smell of corndogs and funnel cake waft through the air. Sunday, July 15 is the last day the fair is open, and runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. According to Ocean County Fair Manager O.J. "Chip" Meyer, the fair has grown over its 66-year history, going from a one-day animal show to a full six-day event. “We have everything from animals, rides, games, shows and community events, to everything in between,” Meyer said. “We have pig races, chainsaw carvers and the rides are really big this year. The Ocean County Fair kicks off its second day today with a reduced nightime schedule from 5 to 11 p.m. On tap for tonight: The fair will have full days and nights Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and 11 am. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The fair also features 4-H demonstrations, craft demonstrations, rides, food, funnel cakes and music. Fair visitors can purchase "pay one price" tickets for $20 on Tuesday and $20 Wednesday. The 2012 Ocean County Fair gets under way late this afternoon at Robert J. Miller Airpark in Berkeley Township. The fair will have shortened schedules from 5 to 11 p.m. today and Wednesday; full days and nights Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and 11 am. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. And unlike past recent fairs where temperatures were in the 90s, this week will be a lot easier on visitors and animals alike, with temperatures in the 80s and sunny skies. A lot of preparation goes on behind the scenes for the annual event held at Robert J. Miller Airpark in Berkeley Township
As soon as Saturday night's violent thunderstorms had swept through, O.J. "Chip" Meyer crossed his fingers and sped down Route 530 to see if the tents had held up through winds as high as 80 miles per hour. "It was intense," Meyer, 42, said. "I was thinking I would come here and find the tents on the ground." But the tents - anchored by metal beams sunk several feet into the ground at Robert J. Miller Airpark - held throughout the storms. Sunday it was back to business to ready the clearing at Robert J. Miller Airpark for the Ocean County Fair, which kicks off at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Fair runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The last full day of the Ocean County Fair is packed with events, including a horse costume contest,, 4-H cat show, magic show and a children's pie eating contest. Diego from Nick Jr. wil be on hand throughout the day to meet visitors. Kids can also have their picture taken with a wolf from the Disney movie "Sorcercer's Apprentice." At least two of the wolves from Howling Woods Farm will be at the fair all day Saturday and Sunday.
