Point Beach Organization Meeting on Jan. 5

Andy Cortes will be sworn in as new council member

The Point Beach Council Organization meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 5. The Point Beach Council voted unanimously on Tuesday night for the scheduling of the organization meeting, as part of a vote for a "consent agenda" that contained numerous agenda items. However, at least a few council members were not delighted about the date. Council members Stephen Reid and William Mayer asked Mayor Vincent Barrella why the meeting was not Jan. 1, which has often been the date for the council's organization meeting every year. Mayer said, "I was disappointed my schedule wasn't consulted." Barrella said Council member Michael Corbally, who was absent Tuesday night, will not be back from a vacation by Jan. 1, so he postponed the meeting until …

Until the Spring Lake wannabees or "think they are" residents of The Point get their heads out of the beach sand, it will continue. All of the elected choices are poor. When it comes to the town election it's like picking execution by firing squad or hanging. You are getting a choice but you're gonna die just the same. The first step is removing the bad seeds. The sooner the Hennessy's move the …   more ›

UPDATE: Point Boro Also Continues Brush and Debris Collection

Leaves can also be brought to the recycling center

Point Borough is continuing collection of brush, tree limbs and household debris, in addition to resuming leaf collection. Brush is currently being collected in Section 1 and then collection will move through town. Many residents had brush collected over the weekend (including in sections 4 and 5), but some of that collection was done by Ocean County and by a group associated with FEMA. The Borough is also collecting tree limbs that are 3 inches by 5 to 6 feet. The Borough asks that residents try to get the brush cut as close as possible to those lengths, although that's not being strictly enforced. Larger tree limbs and tree trunks and cut-up trunks will be collected on dates still to be determined. Household debris is also being …

Point Beach Council Votes For Midnight Bar Closings

UPDATE: Council votes for preliminary approval for second ordinance giving bars the option to pay fees to stay open until 2 a.m.

Point Beach council voted on Tuesday night for bars to close at midnight, two hours earlier than the current 2 a.m. closing time. Councilmembers Kristine Tooker, Bret Gordon and Michael Corbally voted for the earlier bar closing, while Councilmembers William Mayer, Tim Lurie and Stephen Reid voted against it. That left Mayor Vincent Barrella to break the tie, and he voted yes. The ordinance goes into effect on July 1. The council also voted for preliminary approval for a second ordinance giving bars the option to pay fees to stay open until 2 a.m., which is the current closing time. However, councilmembers agreed to postpone the deadline for bars to request a later closing time from the town. That deadline had been May 24 but was moved to …

UPDATE: Boardwalk Says Offer Still on Table Despite DCA Letter

Boardwalk still offering $800,000 over five years, despite state saying proposed bar ordinance "appears to be unlawful"

A Boardwalk offer to pay $800,000 over five years is "still on the table," despite that the state says a related town proposal "appears to be unlawful." Marilou Halvorsen, Director of Marketing for Jenkinson's Boardwalk, said late Tuesday afternoon that Jenkinson's and Martell's are still jointly offering the payment, despite that the state Department of Community Affairs is questioning the legality of a proposed ordinance that would compel bars to pay fees to stay open past midnight (see related story posted on top of home page). "But if they pass a 12 o'clock bar closing, I'm sure it won't be," Halvorsen said. "But our offer is still on the table because it's in everyone's best interest to come up with a resolution," she said. Now it …

Beach_N8iv, What do you mean by a BENNY-come-lately crowd happy? There is a heck of a lot of residents that are originally from here or have been here for years that actually think these are great ideas. Don't blame the newbies if that is what you are trying to say... That is a down right lie. Maybe that is what you think, that is not true. The difference is most of the newbies are not hiding …   more ›
