Santa, trains and cookies at cabin at Riverfront Park
Santa Claus will be at the Bennett Cabin at Riverfront Park from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Children can sit on Santa's lap, have their photos taken by their parents and tell Santa what they want for Christmas at the historic cabin, decked out in full holiday decor, complete with trains running around the Christmas tree. The train area is twice as big as last year's. And, this year, Santa has a quieter, larger room to have that quality, one-on-one time with the children. And there's room for Mrs. Claus to sit right next to him. "Visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and enjoy his trains, antique dolls and a display by Rudolph," says the Point Pleasant Borough Chamber of Commerce, which is sponsoring the event and serving hot chocolate and homemade …

Come to Nellie Bennett to help families and have fun
A "Post Hurricane Holiday Gathering" will be held at Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School on Riviera Parkway on Saturday. The event is open to the general public and admission is free, but the district is asking for donations of gift cards to be given to displaced families. The holiday celebration is from 2 to 5 p.m. and will feature games and arts and crafts for children, as well as a table where residents can sign up to ask for help for themselves or others or to offer help, said Schools Superintendent Vincent Smith. Marcie Bradley, school social worker from Memorial Middle School's Guidance Department, will be there to provide information about the district's "Adopt a Family" Program which involves Borough families in helping other …

Public school district also announces two days added to end of June
The effects of Superstorm Sandy will reach into the middle of June for Point Borough public school students. There will be no weeklong spring break in April, although students will still have off on Mon. April 1, the day after Easter. Also, two days will be added on to the end of the school year in June, and there will be other changes, all to make up for the eight days of school closures just after Sandy ripped through town, according to the district website. The schools were closed for two weeks, which normally would have meant 10 days of no school. However, two of those days, Nov. 8 and 9, had been planned as days off for the annual taachers' convention in Atlantic City. The convention was cancelled due to Sandy but Borough schools …

Sales for Point Borough High School are lagging due to Superstorm Sandy
The Project Graduation Committee is urging the Point Borough community to buy Christmas trees, poinsettias and holiday greens by Monday to make sure the alcohol-free event happens next June. The night at the Atlantic Club following the Point Borough High School graduation is at risk of becoming a secondary victim of Superstorm Sandy because organizers lost a few valuable weeks to sell the holiday flowers and greenery. Sales started at the end of October, just as the storm was hitting and then the local public schools were closed for two weeks, so sales are way behind and the deadline is Monday. "We are trying to focus on not letting Sandy take the holiday out of Point Pleasant and to let Project Graduation bring the holiday spirit with …

Regular schedule on Friday
Due to the weather forecast, Point Beach schools will remain closed on Wednesday but will reopen on Thursday following a two-hour delayed schedule, said Schools Superintendent John Ravally on Tuesday. "We will be open on Friday for a regular day," Ravally said. "Our hope is to get the kids back together with their teachers and friends as soon as possible so we can best assess how we can help them move forward." The original plan was that all public schools in New Jersey would be closed Thursday and Friday for the annual teachers' convention in Atlantic City. However, the convention was cancelled due to storm damage in Atlantic City. The weather forecast on Wednesday shows there may be a nor'easter causing coastal flooding, which is a …

Founders say they are searching for temporary and permanent spaces -- but CBA won't be Trinity's new home.
At its first public event in Lincroft, the founders of the all-girls school Trinity Hall announced they are in discussions with Middletown officials about potentially opening their school within the township in fall 2013. The founders made the announcement before 150 people, including some Point Pleasant Borough families, at an International Day of the Girl event held Thursday night at Christian Brothers Academy. The event served as a preview for the documentary called 10X10, which highlights the education of 10 girls in 10 developing countries, set to be released this spring. Parents with daughters ranging in age from preschool through eighth grade filled about half of the CBA theater. Trinity Hall supporters working the event handed out…

Assembly speaker part of school's new positive incentive program
Just imagine if you were stuck in a wheelchair, unable to talk on your own, and people around you talked to you like were not intelligent or worse. That was one of the messages that Denise Ghizzone, who cannot walk or talk on her own, gave to Point Pleasant Borough High School students on Friday. Her presentation was part of a kick-off celebration to start a new positive behavior program called "Be On Point." She knows how it feels to be spoken to like she's stupid or like she has a hearing problem, when she is actually a highly intelligent person who can hear everything, sometimes things she would rather not hear. "You have to realize, when you see somebody in a wheelchair, don't assume they aren't smart," Ghizzone said. "And don't assume…
