A Local Way To Honor The Fallen

The Run For The Fallen will pass through Point Pleasant Beach and end in Holmdel

Sept. 11, 2001, was a day that drastically changed many of our lives. Now there is a local way to honor those who passed: The Run for the Fallen.   The event, which will begin at Saturday, Sept. 24 at 6:30 a.m., is a two-day 152-mile run of active duty military runners that starts in Cape May and ends Sunday in Holmdel at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial. The purpose of this run is to honor and remember each soldier who gave their life in a war. At each mile marker, a New Jersey hero will be honored by the run team stopping for a one-minute service and prayer, and then presenting a flag and personalized bio to the hero's family and friends. Saturday's run will be to honor lives lost in Operarition Iraqi Freedom. But on Sunday, Sept. 25, the …

Honor the fallen by ending the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Yemen, and all the other countries which have been invaded, bombed, and terrorized. Declare peace and bring the troops, the CIA, and the contractors back to the homeland to be with their families.   more ›

UPDATE: The Jersey Shore Remembers 9/11

Events held throughout the day in Monmouth and Ocean counties to commemorate 10th anniversary of 9/11

In Holiday City, Toms River and elsewhere, Jersey Shore residents remembered, cried and came to terms with what happened 10 years ago, when 3,000 people - some of them local, others not - perished at the hands of terrorists. A large crowd gathered at Holiday City at Berkeley's Clubhouse 2 for a ceremony to honor those who were lost during the attacks of 9/11. Berkeley Mayor Jason Varano addressed the audience and said although the tragedy was horrific, it united the country. "While the loss was great beyond description... we came together to support each other during those terrible days," Mayor Varano said. "We didn't let terrorism bring us to our knees." The Central Regional High School band performed songs such as "God Bless America," …

9/11 Anniversary: September 11 Snapshots & Stories

The fire and rubble from those four maliciously misguided jetliners stayed close to lower Manhattan, Arlington, Va., and Shanksville, Pa. But the shockwaves reached around the world and continue to reverberate to this day.

A Soldier Reflects

10 years later, a Belmar veteran recalls his post 9/11 military service

A thick beard and long blonde hair are a far cry from the clean-shaved and high and tight haircut he sported during his years in the Army, but for Jon Keller the memories of his service in Iraq and Afghanistan are still vivid. As Americans reflect upon the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, the Afghanistan and Iraq veteran can't believe how fast the time flew. "Where did the time go? It feels like it just happened," he said. "I guess I'll be looking back on the 20th anniversary and thinking 'where did 10 years go?' " Now a Belmar resident, Keller was a 15-year-old sophomore at Shore Regional High School when the attacks happened. "I was actually supposed to have detention that day," he joked. While Keller said …

Finding the Words for the Children of Sept. 11

Poet BJ Ward, noting the difficulties inherent in 'For the Children of the World Trade Center Victims'

As a poet from a working-class New Jersey background who teaches at a small community college tucked into the Northwest corner of his home state, BJ Ward is accustomed to being ignored. Which makes the public’s awareness — and gratitude — for one of his poems, For the Children of the World Trade Center Victims, all the more remarkable to him. Ten years after the Sept. 11 attacks, Ward still hears from the children and wives of Sept. 11 (but no husbands so far) emailing or calling to thank him for expressing what they are still trying to absorb. “They are the living victims. They still have an inability to grasp what happened. Their most personal tragedy is linked to our greatest national tragedy,” said Ward during a phone interview from …

Coming Home After 9-11

For some time, I had trouble finding the right words. Little did I know that I had already written them.

I've long wondered how I should lend my voice to the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. As the Jersey Shore regional editor for Patch.com, I often get called on to write the obituary of record, or to find the right prose for the event of the month—Hurricane Irene, for example—that commands the attention of my hometown area. This time, I was expecting to step into the background, and let others shine. Little did I know, however, that the words were already written. The book of my family, "A Legacy of Madness: Recovering My Family From Generations of Mental Illness," will be released on Oct. 3 in bookstores nationwide. I've resisted merging this author life with my work life. But what happened 10 years ago was more than a story. It …
