Obama May Visit Point Beach Tuesday, Says Christie

Christie visits brother's house in Point Beach, then greets residents on boardwalk in downpour

President Obama may visit Point Pleasant Beach on Tuesday, but it's not definite yet if that will be one of his stops at the Jersey Shore, said Gov. Christie in Point Beach early Friday afternoon. "I don't know yet where he's going," said Christie, on the second level of the Boardwalk Bar and Grill on Friday, in between doing television interviews and greeting Jenkinson's owners and other well-wishers. "But, yes, this is one of the places that's being looked at," he said. "It's up to the White House where he goes. They tell us where they want to go and we bring them." "Put in a good word for Point Beach, Governor," said Point Beach Councilman William Mayer, smiling. "Put in a good word for Point Beach? OK!" replied Christie, matter of …

Mr. Pyrtko, thank you for your invitation to leave a comment. You aver that Christie is a great “hands on elected official”. There is a problem with Christie’s hands. Christie’s hands are unclean. Shortly after the Ashbritt contract was unsigned, Christie attended a fundraiser sponsored by the Ashbritt company. Christie’s action of receiving campaign donation money from a fundraiser sponsored by …   more ›

@Sqandered Youth, as usual you are the voice of reason. I do understand the rationale that the bludgeoning the residential community is short sighted and quite frankly, not feasible. An economic backfire is inevitable. I hope that it not be too little-- too late. The suggestion by the Governor that " some people have decisions to make about elevating and insurance" and that is the reason that …   more ›

Point Boro Councilmen Clash Over Possible Attorney Hire

A Florida-based law firm, with offices in New Jersey, may be hired to help recoup Sandy insurance money

Point Borough Council may hire a law firm to help collect Superstorm Sandy insurance money, but the Democrats want to look at additional firms before voting. Point Borough Republican Councilmen Bob Sabosik and Bill Borowsky tried in vain at the Tuesday night council meeting at Borough Hall to convince their Demcratic colleagues to hire William F. "Chip" Merlin Jr. of the Merlin Law Group, based in Florida. Sabosik said Merlin has been successful for more than 20 years getting additional insurance money for towns that have suffered through natural disasters. The Merlin website says: "Since 1983, Chip Merlin has served as a plaintiff's attorney with a focus on Commercial and Residential Property Insurance Claim Disputes and Bad Faith …

It doesn't cost you anything. It's a contingency fee. Contingent on him getting you your money. He's a boutique style attorney. This is what he does. Storms, and the insurance companies who do not want to pay. Would you hire a renowned heart surgeon to do your kidney transplant? Same thing with attorneys. He specializes in this exact type of law. 'This Old House' Featuring a Point Boro House and Others

PBS show about renovating and elevating Sandy-flooded homes

An eight-episode series of 'This Old House' focuses on several local homes rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy. The PBS' show will first air in October. PBS announced the show worked on an 1880s cottage in Bay Head, a 1950s Colonial in Point Pleasant, and a prefabricated new house in Manasquan. Side stories will also feature restoration projects in Mantoloking, Long Beach Island, and Ocean Grove and other local projects along the beach and the bay. Here is the complete announcement from the show producers: Months after Superstorm Sandy devastated shorelines on the East Coast, affected homeowners are still determining how to rebuild in a landscape of provisional FEMA regulations, delayed building permits and continued weather risks. During …

Hope And Healing for Sandy Victims

Point Borough and Point Beach residents encouraged to call NJ Hope and Healing

The mood has changed. A log from NJ Hope and Healing shows that people impacted by Hurricane Sandy have gone from feeling shocked, sad and tired, with a loss of appetite, to angry, hopeless and unable to make decisions. “People are having a natural reaction to abnormal circumstances,” said Carol Benevy, Project Lead for NJ Hope and Healing. NJ Hope and Healing is a project sponsored by the New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Disaster and Terrorism Branch, through a FEMA grant. In partnership with Barnabas Health Institute for Prevention, NJ Hope and Healing offers support to communities in the aftermath of Sandy. “We coordinate statewide efforts to help individuals and communities manage the emotional impact of …

Dune System At Island Beach State Park Didn't Cause Sandy Damage To Mainland, DEP Says

Island Beach will not be included in Army Corps of Engineers' dune and beach replenishment program

South Seaside Park resident Donald Whiteman's family has lived on the barrier island section of Berkeley Township for seven decades. And they know a washout from a storm when they see one, going all the way back to the Hurricane of 1938, he has said at more than one Berkeley Township Council meeting. Whiteman again urged township officials at the May 5 meeting to pressure the state Department of Environmental Protection to include Island Beach in the Army Corps of Engineers dune and beach replenishment program. "Residents in South Seaside Park who stayed during the storm recognized there was more than one breach," he said. "Island Beach had about five washouts." Whiteman was one of those who rode out the storm. He noticed problems at the …

Part of Point Beach Boardwalk May be Replaced with Wood

Center section of boardwalk slated for work after the summer may be replaced with wood, not rebuilt with Trex

The "plaza" section of the boardwalk, from Arnold Avenue to Jenkinson's Aquarium, might be rebuilt with wood, not with Trex. There was discussion at Tuesday night's Point Beach Council meeting about rebuilding the plaza section with wood, not Trex, the plastic material that is being used to replace the sections of the boardwalk which were damaged by Tropical Storm Irene or Superstorm Sandy. But there was a general consensus at the meeting at Borough Hall that that decision won't be made until council gets additional information from Borough Engineer Ray Savacool. Based on information from Savacool so far, it appears that removing and replacing the boards in the plaza section with wood boards would cost about $280,000 and rebuilding with …

Ok, not sure if everyone is aware of this but Trex has only been around since 1999, so I'm not sure where the "proof" is that it will be able to perform for 25 years. In fact, they only provide a limited 10 year warranty on the product for commercial use and in 2009 they lost a class action suit because it was breaking down. Add in the sun, salt and traffic of the PP BW and you may not even make …   more ›

DOT Postpones Route 35 Reconstruction

But state will work on drainage, pump stations during summer

The state is postponing Route 35 reconstruction until after Labor Day, a welcome relief to local officials and business people who feared that the work would cause massive traffic delays all summer. "I'm very happy," said Bay Head Mayor Bill Curtis. "This is more than enough of a change, even if they start the day after Labor Day." He and other Bay Head officials and business owners had also been concerned the state Department of Transportation (DOT) road work would kill parking spaces on Route 35, just as businesses are hoping a robust summer tourism season can help them recover from Superstorm Sandy. Point Pleasant Beach Mayor Vincent Barrella had more of a mixed reaction. "I'm pleased, but disappointed they didn't let me know," said …

UPDATE: Crew Starting to Move House from Bay: Route 35 South Backed Up

A state DEP crew is starting to work on the house swept into the bay by Sandy

If you can possibly avoid driving on Route 35 south through the Bay Head-Mantoloking area this morning, it would probably be a good idea. A crew is starting to work on a house that needs to be demolished and moved out of Barnegat Bay. Traffic continues to be heavy on the state highway and it's not yet known when it will clear up, Mantoloking police said on Thursday morning. "Two road jobs" and the state work on the house press are contributing to the congestion, police said. The state Department of Transportation is holding a press conference about the state's plan to begin dismantling a house that Superstorm Sandy flung into Barnegat Bay. A press release issued on Wednesday states: "Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner …
