A Matawan man with close ties to Union Beach was one of several Sandy survivors to be published in the collection titled "Oh Sandy: An Anthology of Humorous Stories for a Serious Cause."
Hurricane Sandy was no laughing matter for those people displaced from their flooded homes, for those throwing out hundreds of dollars worth of food after losing power or for those who lost their homes entirely. However, they say laughter is the best medicine. "When you are gutting people's houses, you either start laughing or start crying and don't stop," said James Butler, a former Union Beach resident who continues to coach youth soccer there. "When you are dealing with tragedy there is at first shock and then you kind of move on to the gallows of humor." Each day after the storm, Butler, now a Matawan resident, visited Union Beach to help his parents, his childhood friends and his soccer players' families clean up and rebuild. He …

Rescue vessel sunk in recent nor'easter
The Point Pleasant Beach First Aid Squad needs the community's help to repair or replace its sunken rescue and dive boat, the only rescue boat in the region. The boat sank during the most recent nor'easter that battered the Jersey Shore and the insurance claim will fall very short of actual repair or replacement cost, according to a prepared statement from the squad. The 24 foot Stieger Craft, designed for dive, rescue, recovery and EMS water response, sunk while at a squad member's dock on Woodland Ave, Point Beach, just a few blocks from the squad headquarters on Laurel Avenue, between Bay Avenue and Route 35 South. The all volunteer emergency squad, which serves Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head and Mantoloking, operates solely on …

An undetermined amount of money raised by tickets sold to view the sandy behemoth will be used to help Sandy victims in the greater Point Beach area
Some of the revenue raised through ticket sales to view a giant sandcastle to be built on Jenkinson's Beach will go towards local residents still reeling in Sandy's aftermath. And some of the funds will be used for Sandy victims in other parts of the Jersey Shore and the state, said Ed Jarrett, the artist about to start creating "Sandy Castle," a 50-foot-tall sandcastle structure on the beach in front of Jenkinson's Aquarium. The idea is that the sandcastle will be a draw for visitors from far and near from the time it's finished, in late May or early June, until it's dismantled, in mid or late September, explained Jarrett, in an interview on the beach, at the site of the future castle, on Wednesday evening. Children and seniors will pay…

Live bands at Idle Hour raise money for Point Beach Fire and EMS
A rockin' fundraiser at the Idle Hour Saturday night to raise money for the Point Beach Fire Department is now also raising money for Point Beach EMS. The fundraiser, starting at 4 p.m. with a line-up of seven bands, was originally conceived to raise money for the Point Beach Fire Department volunteers, whose firehouse on Arnold Avenue was flooded by Sandy. Then the fire department asked Rock-N-Relief, the event organizers, to donate part of the proceeds to Point Beach EMS (also known as the Point Pleasant First Aid and Emergency Squad). Rock-N-Relief announced on their Facebook event page: "I wanted to let everyone know that we're including the Point Pleasant First Aid too. The Fire Department brought it to our attention that Point …
