George "Bob" Armstrong, John McMenamin are challenging incumbent WIlliam Polhemus for sheriff's post. Polhemus declined to comment
The race for the Ocean County Sheriff's position includes three candidates this year, and two of them are talking about cutting overtime. Only Republican William C. Polhemus, 84, who is seeking his 10th three-year term as sheriff, declined to talk at all. Polhemus did not respond to emails and phone calls from Patch reporters for a pre-election interview. An attempt to see him at his office in the Justice Complex on Thursday was turned down, with a secretary relaying, "Thank you for taking the time to stop by, but he's not interested." He is being challenged by Democrat George "Bob" Armstrong, 68, and independent John McMenamin. Armstrong and McMenamin, both reached by phone, said the amount of overtime being paid to employees of the …

Veteran sheriff turns down invitation from Ocean County League of Women Voters
Eighty-four-year-old Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus has turned down a request by the Ocean County League of Women Voters for a debate with his Democratic opponent, a league official said. "It is not going to take place," said OCLWV President Sheila McVeigh. McVeigh said she sent invitations to Polhemus and Democrat George "Bob" Armstrong for an Oct. 10 debate in Toms River Town Hall. Armstrong accepted, Polhemus did not, she said. Former Toms River Mayor Paul C. Brush, who is Armstrong's campaign manager, said it was "unfortunate" that Polhemus will not participate. "Bob Armstrong has accepted because he feels it is important to have an informed electorate, but the sheriff has rejected the invitation," Brush said. "This is a …

Democrat challenging longtime Sheriff William L. Polhemus in race for three-year term.
The Democratic candidate running for Ocean County sheriff this year says issues, not age, will be the focus of his campaign. George "Bob" Armstrong, 68, is challenging 83-year-old William L. Polhemus for the three-year sheriff's term in November. He unveiled his platform on the steps of the Ocean County Courthouse Monday afternoon. He doesn't plan to make an issue out of Polhemus' age. "That's up to the voters to decide," Armstrong said in an interview this morning. "Even if he was only 60 years old, it's been way too long," he added. "It's just outrageous for one person to be there for 27 years." Armstrong said his 40-year career in law enforcement will benefit the Sheriff's Department and the residents of Ocean County. He has served as a…
