Team captain meeting tonight
Participants in Relay for Life at Point Borough High School on Saturday are asking their friends and neighbors to support their efforts to fight cancer. The fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. Sat. at the high school stadium field. It will not continue as an overnight event as did last year's fundraiser held at Community Park. The event, like last year's, is expected to draw hundreds of participants and supporters. As planning continues, there is a captain's meeting tonight (see attached PDF for details). For more information about the schedule for the event, how to participate or how to donate to a particular team, please see the event website.

No decision yet on who gets the money
Mary Pat Christie arrived in person on Friday to thank two local companies for raising money for her Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund. Not one to make long speeches, she stopped at Jersey Mike's, 901 Richmond Ave., Point Pleasant Beach, thanked them for the money they will be donating to her relief fund during March, did short interviews with reporters, grabbed a sub for the road, and then zipped over to Rite Aid on Bridge Avenue in Point Pleasant Borough. She consistently ran ahead of schedule and while she was extremely appreciative, her remarks were brief and to the point. Rite Aid donated nearly $350,000 to the First Lady's relief fund which has received "$32 million in commitments," Christie said. "We're hoping to raise $50 …

Motorists urged to take alternate routes
Point Beach police are reminding the public that the local Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk will cause some traffic delays from early this morning through late this afternoon. Motorists are urged to avoid driving in the oceanfront and downtown sections of Point Beach if possible between early Sunday morning and late Sunday afternoon, said Detective Pat Petruzziello. When that's not possible, motorists are advised to allow considerable extra travel time since at least 15,000 walkers are expected to come to town, which will cause a lot of extra vehicular traffic, from walkers driving into town, and foot traffic from the walk itself, Petruzziello said. To help reduce vehicular traffic, there will be free shuttles running from 8 a.m…

Drop-off site is Terry Perko Realtors, 2424 Bridge Ave., Point Borough
The public is urged to drop off non-perishable food to Terry Perko Realtors, 2424 Bridge Ave., Point Borough, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The most needed foods are, soups, pasta, tuna fish and other canned meats, peanut butter and jelly, and jars of tomato sauce. The amount of food in the pantry is low, even as more and more families are visiting. In last year's food drive, the pantry was filled and organizers are hoping for the same success this year. The real estate office is arranging for trucks to transport the food from the office to St. Gregory's in Point Beach.

Fundraisers are for Point Boro High School Band
Back to school means back to Jersey Mike's to help Point Borough High School's band raise funds. Jersey Mike's, as it has done last year and in previous years, will donate 15 percent of its proceeds to the high school band from 5 to 9 on the following nights: Sept. 19; Oct. 3, 10 and 17; Nov. 7, 11 and 21; Dec 5 and 19. Patch will provide a flier to print out and take with you to Jersey Mike's when it becomes available, as Sept. 19 gets closer. Patrons must have the flier with them when they purchase food and beverages for the purchase to count towards the band fundraisers. Only one flier per family or group is needed.
