As the latest in a string of coastal storms began to bear down on Brick Township, officials were asking residents of some neighborhoods to be prepared to evacuate. Residents in areas that are prone to flooding, which include all areas east of Old Hooper Avenue; and Princeton Avenue, east of Beaver Dam Road "are strongly encouraged to make preparations and evacuate the area prior to 8 p.m. this evening," said Brick Police Sgt. Keith Reinhard in a prepared release Wednesday afternoon. That swath of land includes the mainland areas hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy, including Shore Acres, Baywood and the streets off St. Lawrence Boulevard. Residents were also being encouraged to move their vehicles to higher ground, Reinhard said. "Residents …

Do not call police for non-emergency questions or problems
Point Borough residents are urged to call a new phone number for any non-emergency questions or problems related to Hurricane Sandy. Residents are urged to call the new number, (732) 899-4935, for the Emergency Operations Center just set up in the Point Boro First Aid Squad building, or email volunteers at pointoem@aol.com, for any non-emergency problems or questions regarding Hurricane Sandy, said Kiel Arnone, deputy Borough Emergency Management Coordinator, a volunteer who will be manning the phone. Arnone's request echoes an even stronger plea made earlier today by Borough Police Chief Larry Williams. "People have to stop calling our department for non-emergencies," Williams said after a meeting with other officials at Borough Hall. He …

Bay Head church also cancels a Sunday event
While the Halloween parade is still on for noon Sunday, the party afterwards is canceled, the Point Borough Chamber of Commerce announced early Saturday afternoon. The parade scheduled to start at noon Sunday and head east on Bridge Avenue is still a go, but the "finish line party" at Community Park afterwards, which was a new addition this year, is canceled, the chamber announced on its Facebook page. There will still be a trophy ceremony for costume contest winners at Community Park after the parade. The chamber is changing plans a few hours after the Borough began asking residents to evacuate on a voluntary basis. The advisory is primarily for those who live in a flood zone, on a waterway, such as Barnegat Bay, creeks or lagoons, and …

Storm did not live up to catastrophic expectations, but still packed a punch
The message from the mayor's office was stark and simple "Whereas it has become evident that all persons present should leave the jurisdiction..." read the Aug. 26, 2011 message sent by then-Berkeley Mayor Jason J. Varano and Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele. But the the notice didn't just include the usual ocean and bayfront areas in South Seaside Park and Pelican island. This time it included residents who lived in the mainland waterfront areas - "...all homes along the Cedar Creek, the Toms River and the bayfront shall evacuate the area." And in case residents didn't get the message, police officers cruised slowly down street after street that Friday night. Bayview Avenue, Harbor Inn Road, Neary Avenue, Cedar Beach, Sandpiper Beach, …

Emergency management officials ramp up storm preparations
Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari has declared a state of emergency throughout Ocean County ahead of Hurricane Irene. Vicari made the announcement at a press conference at the Ocean County Office of Emergency Management at the Robert J. Miller Airpark in Berkeley Township. "Our goal is we don't want one life lost," Vicari said. "In our lifetimes, this is the biggest hurricane we've ever experienced." Hurricane Irene is expected to be a "high Category 1" by the time the county begins to feel tropical force winds at noon on Saturday. The winds may or may not be accompanied by rain at first, said Michael Osborne, chief of the Ocean County Sheriff's Department. Rain and wind will steadily increase into the evening hours on Saturday. The …

Capt. Neil , Dredging will not affect the tidal level of the bay, it will simply make it deeper in the dredged areas. Minus flood gates like are used in the Netherlands, the tidal level is controlled by the source, in this case it's ultimately the Atlantic Ocean.   more ›
