VIDEO: Lt. Gov. Kicks Off Marketing Campaign at Jenkinson's Aquarium

Also says state working with federal officials to fairly disburse block grants to residents

Come to the Jersey Shore for Valentine's Day and then come back in the spring, summer and fall. That was the message from Acting Gov. Kim Guadagno who kicked off the state's "Show your Love for the Jersey Shore" campaign on Monday afternoon at Jenkinson's Aquarium on the boardwalk. "Come to the Jersey Shore for Valentine's Day, we're open for business," Guadagno said, standing at a podium just across from the penguins. She said it's crucial that the private-public marketing campaign effort, which is being done in conjunction with other marketing campaigns, gets the message out so the state's $38 billion tourism industry can again be robust. "The Jersey Shore is a large piece of that industry," she said. "We need to keep our numbers up …

Hurricane Sandy

Still Recovering, Jenkinson's Aquarium Welcomes Public Back

The Point Pleasant Beach fixture is one of several Jenkison's properties to reopen Friday.

A few feet past the welcome sign, the boardwalk, what’s left of it, is still cordoned off. In the opposite direction, in front of the rows of shops with their metal gates pulled down and locked, shielding the view of damaged insides, heavy machines rumbled along, redistributing sand along the beach.  Things are moving in the right direction.  They’ve got a responsibility, said Toby Wolf, Jenkinson's Marketing Director, standing in front of a shark tank at Jenkison’s Aquarium. Wolf said that as New Jersey’s shore towns make their recovery following Hurricane Sandy, the business community needs to be there to welcome the community back, let them know that, despite the destruction caused by the storm, the businesses are not going anywhere. On…

I Need My Penguin Space!

Jenkinson's Aquarium's new penguin exhibit is nearly five times larger than old one

Penguins need their space too and now they have nearly five times as much at Jenkinson's Aquarium. Jenkinson's recently completed a renovation and expansion of the penguin exhibit at the aquarium on the boardwalk, the first major renovation since the aquarium opened in 1991, said Aquarium Director Cindy Claus. Claus, who has worked at the aquarium for 21 years, having started as a curator, said the square footage has increased from 119 to 500 and the pool space has been increased from 1,100 gallons to 4,200. How did the aquarium make more room for the penguins and their pool? "We moved all of the life support into the basement," Claus explained. The "life support" includes machinery that creates ultra-violet light, keeps air and water cold…

Oyster Creek's Tropical Fish Find Homes at Aquariums

Jenkinson's and the Atlantic City Aquarium among those harvesting cownose rays from nuclear plant's discharge canal

Representatives of several East Coast aquariums made stops in Lacey Township recently to harvest tropical fish, including cownose rays. Oyster Creek Generating Station periodically has aquariums come down to its discharge canal to collect fish that made a pit stop at the nuclear plant while migrating to warmer water, spokesperson Suzanne D’Ambrosio said. “We’ve partnered with Jenkinson’s Aquarium and Adventure Aquarium in Camden to harvest any fish that would interest them for their facility,” she said. Oyster Creek uses water to run through and cool the plant, D’Ambrosio said. The water then comes out of its discharge canal warmer than the ambient bay temperature. “It tends to attract tropical and subtropical fish as they’re migrating, …

The Most Popular and Expensive Boardwalk Rides at Seaside and Point

A look at amusements and rides in Seaside Heights, Seaside Park, and Jenkinson's Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach.

The rides at Seaside Heights boardwalk and pier and at Jenkinson's on Point Pleasant Beach are a staple for tourists and locals.  But how much does one ride cost patrons? The difference between the Wally Gater children's coaster and the adult thrill rides isn't just the height requirement to ride them. There's a big dollar difference, too. Here's a rundown of what's new this year at the area's amusement piers, and also the cost to ride some of those attractions. Walking through Funtown Pier, located at 1930 Boardwalk in Seaside Park, the Skycoaster is pulling riders in the area only to release them through the air over the waters. The Slingshot is throwing people into the air and the Ferris Wheel is filled. The Skycoaster costs $20 for a …
