USPS drops plans to halt Saturday mail delivery service

Saturday mail delivery will continue. The United States Postal Service board of governors stated Wednesday that they will delay plans to cease mail delivery on the weekend. Congress has prohibited implementation of a new national delivery schedule for mail and packages, according to a statement released by the board. In February, the Postal Service announced that it would end regular mail delivery on Saturdays beginning early August. The move came as a cost-cutting measure, as the USPS hoped to save $2 billion annually by cutting Saturday delivery service. According to reports, the USPS lost almost $16 billion last year. To save money, the US Postal Service is seeking to end mail delivery of letters on Saturday. Do you support this idea?
The financially-troubled US Postal Service announced Wednesday that in order to save $2 billion annually, it would seek to end the traditional delivery of the Saturday mail beginning in August. Packages would still be delivered. Mail addressed to PO Boxes will still be delivered on Saturdays. Post Offices currently open on Saturdays will remain open on Saturdays. But advertisements, bills and birthday cards destined for street addresses would be held until Monday. The reasons are continued economic struggles and the increasing use of the Internet for communications and bill paying by consumers. U.S. Postal Service rates are set to increase by one cent on Jan. 27
If you're headed to the post office to buy stamps, you will need to carry an extra penny for each one. On Jan. 27, stamp prices will increase one cent, from 45 cents to 46 cents, to mail one-ounce letters. Postcard stamps will also see a one-cent increase, from 32 cents to 33 cents. Those looking to save a few cents can stock up on the postal service's Forever stamps (costing 45 cents until Jan. 27), which are usable even after stamp prices change. According to an announcement by the postal service, new postage rates go into effect on Jan. 27, with letter and postcard stamps being affected. WE do not need Saturday delivery. Anything the USPS is bringing to our homes could wait until Monday. Advertisements & circulars do not need 2 Billion dollars worth of Saturday delivery.   more ›
