Hurricane Sandy

Mantoloking Home's Elevation Featured in FEMA Video As Reason for Its Hurricane Survival

FEMA video focuses on how one home survived while neighbors did not

Ed Wright's home, now, is one of few standing. But prior to Hurricane Sandy, it was one of the few standing on pilings on his street in Mantoloking. So many others were at ground level, and a recent FEMA video implies it was the foresight to raise the home years ago that helped Wright's home see less damage from Hurricane Sandy. In a dramatically damaged area of Mantoloking, FEMA found one homeowner's house had survived, and produced a video about Wright's plans years ago to raise his house, and how it impacted the home during Hurricane Sandy. FEMA's video, titled "Elevation Helps a Home Survive Hurricane Sandy," features interviews with Wright and pictures before and after the storm.

Scenes From A Warm, Shore Afternoon

NWS: Mercury hits 91 degrees; Fishing, boating, hustle and bustle on hot spring day

It took a while, but spring finally arrived Tuesday at the Jersey Shore - and it felt more like July than April! As of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the high temperature at Lakehurst Naval Air Station was 91 degrees, recorded at exactly 5 p.m. At Monmouth Executive Airport in Wall, the mercury officially rose to 84 degrees, recorded at 3:55 p.m. Both temperatures were reported by the National Weather Service. A west wind kept temperatures high Tuesday even near the ocean. The ocean water temperature in Atlantic City was recorded as being 47 degrees Tuesday, while the temperature of Barnegat Bay was 58 degrees as recorded at the Mantoloking Bridge in Brick. The bay water temperature has risen dramatically over the past several days. A week ago, it was…

Mantoloking: Route 35 to Remain Closed North of Bridge

Houses still exposed north of the bridge

Route 35 north of Herbert Street – known as Mantoloking Road on the Brick side of the Mantoloking Bridge – remains closed in Mantoloking Borough, officials said. Drivers proceeding north on Route 35 from points south may not continue unless they have a Mantoloking borough pass, said Mantoloking Police Lt. John D. Barcus. The roadway is also closed in the southbound direction at Mathis Place in Bay Head to Herbert Street. Even if drivers are residents of a neighboring town, they are not allowed to traverse Route 35 in that area without a Mantoloking pass. There has been no determination made as to when the highway may reopen north of the bridge. At a Jan. 7 borough council meeting, Mayor George Nebel said many houses were still exposed and …

Route 35, Mantoloking Bridge to Reopen Today

Christie has approved barrier island repopulation plan

Starting Monday, the public will once again be able to drive over the Mantoloking Bridge and on Route 35. The state of emergency that barred public travel over the bridge and on the state highway will be amended as of 7 a.m., meaning travel on the barrier island – which has been restricted to limited visits by residents and authorized individuals – will be allowed for the first time since Oct. 29 when Superstorm Sandy rolled ashore. Residents will also be able to allowed to live in their homes on a full-time basis. The repopulation plan, which was jointly signed by the mayors of Brick, Toms River and Seaside Heights, received approval from Gov. Chris Christie's office on Friday afternoon. Residents in all of those towns, with the exception…

I am a year round resident in Point Pleasant who has traveled Rt 35 to Brick and Toms River instead of Rt 70. It is the shortest route to many of my destinations. My husband and I are members of The Surfrider Foundation and have worked side by side with families who have lost their homes and are trying to get them back. We are volunteers doing back breaking work. Even though we're in neighboring …   more ›

Access to Brick Barrier Island Neighborhoods Closed Thursday

Wind, flooding to blame

The Brick Township Office of Emergency Management has closed the Brick Township portion of the barrier island Thursday due to flooding and high winds, police said. "We will continue to monitor the situation and once the flooding and winds subside and it is deemed safe, we will announce the re-opening of the Brick Township portion of the barrier island," said Brick Police Sgt. Keith Reinhard.

Hurricane Sandy

Mantoloking Bridge to be Closed Wednesday

Barrier island residents need to enter through Bay Head

The Mantoloking Bridge will be closed to traffic from 4 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday the township has announced. The closure is to perform necessary roadwork repairs, officials said. It is expected to be the last closure of the bridge until until work begins on the damaged houses next to the span, the date of which is not yet known. Barrier island residents and contractors must access their neighborhoods by going south of Route 35 through Bay Head and Mantoloking, then to Brick. Contractors must still register at the VFW on Adamston Road and receive a pass before accessing the island through the detoured route. No residents or contractors should stop on Route 35 in Bay Head or Mantoloking except in an emergency, officials said, or they risk …

Hurricane Sandy

As Barrier Island Reopens, Rebuilding Continues Where Inlet Formed

Road had been washed out by Sandy

Aside from the image of the Jet Star roller coaster in Seaside Heights lying in the ocean, few images of Superstorm Sandy's wrath were as iconic as the Mantoloking Bridge being dubbed the "bridge to nowhere" after a new inlet formed near Herbert Street in Mantoloking. But when Brick residents returned to the barrier island Monday morning, significant progress had been made on the destroyed roadways near the base of the bridge. After Sandy struck, ocean water flowed freely through a newly formed inlet into Barnegat Bay. With it came flood waters that ravaged many mainland sections of Ocean County - especially bayfront neighborhoods such as Shore Acres in Brick. As recently as 10 days ago, when Patch was granted a tour of the area, no roads …

Hurricane Sandy

Mantoloking Bridge Structurally Sound, But Some Repairs Needed

During Sandy, bridge was thought to have been taken out

The Mantoloking Bridge will live to see traffic once again. The county-owned bridge, which crosses Barnegat Bay and connects Brick with Mantoloking, was the subject of initial reports during Hurricane Sandy's landfall that indicated it suffered heavy damage, but tests have shown it survived and remains structurally sound. "The structure of the bridge has not been compromised," said Brick Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis. Acropolis said engineers have tested the bridge and it is safe to handle all vehicular traffic, including heavy construction vehicles. Some repairs will be needed, however, including some reconstruction on the bottom of the bridge where it hit land. At some point over the next week to 10 days, Acropolis said, the bridge will …

Mantoloking Bridge Considered 'Unstable;' Fires Raging Nearby

Emergency crews will access barrier island neighborhoods from the south

Two days after Hurricane Sandy hit the area, fires still rage in Camp Osborn. Emergency services were on the ground as of this morning, according to Brick Police Sgt. Keith Reinhard. "We have people on the ground, but they had to go in by foot," he said. "We will have a larger contingency coming from the south, the Toms River area." The Mantoloking Bridge was damaged during Sandy and during a prelimenary inspection, county officials have deemed the bridge unstable, ploice said. "We have focused our efforts on the mainland, doing search and rescue in low lying areas," Reinhard said. "Now our focus is going to be on the barrier island, as well as removing trees and power lines from the roads." State EMS and the National Guard, who should be …
