ReplyThe canal was one of the worst things to happen to the manasquan river and the bay. It drastically changed the eco systems. Furthermore if there was no canal there would be a lot less boat traffic on the manasquan. There certainly are a lot of boating ah's out there that should not even be allowed to pilot a boat!

@Ken Farber the water displaced by fill does not effect the bay Flood STage carrying capacity unless that fill is above the water at low tide. Also the sand fill slows down the tide as there is more resistance to fluid flow then deep water.

@Ken Farber ? If water seeks it own level when the ocean is at elev. 5 and the bay is six inches, what happens?

ReplyThere was a number of differant inlets between the upper Barnegat Bay. The last one was Cranberry Inlet where the Ortley?Saeside A & P is now. Older inlet were farther North. Those inlets were where there are sedge island in the bay near the barrier island. Those inlet were not open all at the same time. Big Storms would close them with a sand bar. Sometimes they would open themselves if the water backed up. The problem with a new inlet would be that man has built close and low to the water in the bay on all sides. That would mean thousands of Flooded homes on the regular basis. The high tide in the bay normally go up and down a couple of inches and the Ocean tides go up and down 3-5 ft. If you doubt that please refer to the tide chart diiferance of the Ocean and Mantoloking on the Bay. Also when the Ocean is high the bay is just near low as those tides are about 5 hours apart in normal conditions.

That would help clean the bay. But the high tide in the bay would be 3-4 feet twice a day. Look up the high tides and their corresponding elevations!

ReplyAll boardwalks to be rebuilt should be designed to minmize flooding. They could with have a barrier incorporated into design in or in front of it. Sheet pile could double as the railing. That railing height would probably be close in elevation to the V zone storm elevation.
Rock, Stone, and Fabric Revetment could be added to the sheet pile. That revetment would stabiilze sheet pile and boardwalk. Drop in or closing gates would allow acces and protection. This would also reduce sand loss due to wind erosion. If the railing was continous many areas would not have had overwash and subsequent flooding and deposition of sand.
There is too much concern to get the Boardwalks up and running for the impending summer season. The towns should be more responsible for the property west of the Boardwalk. After all those properties pay the bulk of the taxes.
Furthermore, the NJDEP should stop or revoke permits that allow for Beach Maintenance. Every years dunes start and are leveled when the beach is reshaped for the tourist season.

ReplyThe breaches did not develop to full size inlets. Those breaches were a lot smaller then a full size inlets. Being of smaller size only a smaller quantity of water can flow in and out. If the Breaches were left to nature most likely they would become much larger and have a lot more tidal flow in them.

ReplyYes an Inlet would help clean the bay. But the high tide increase of +/-four feet twice a day would cause for much flooding not only in Manto but the entire upper bay.
Compare the tide chart predicted elevations for the Ocean and Mantoloking bay front
The tide changes +/- four feet in the ocean in the bay it just changes a few inches. A new inlet would cause for a lot more frequent flooding of non silver spooners living on the west side of the bay.
