ReplyThis is obviously an incredible tragedy, at this particular time our thoughts and comments should really only be words of sympathy, compassion, kindness etc. There will be time for speculation about why, how etc. Remember, a lot of family members as well as friends read these articles. My heart is breaking for these people, I am a grandfather of two sweet little grandsons 3 and 4. I would not know how to go on living should anything like this ever happen to them. Please, let us all just offer words of encouragement, solace and comfort in this time of great sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in this horrific tragedy.

ReplyWow, this guy thinks very fast on his feet, should be able to find some honest work somewhere, pay for his tickets and whatever else he has outstanding. Sgt. Drew and the boys had a little chuckle when all was said and done I am quite sure. I'm still snickering a bit myself and I read this 15 minutes ago.

ReplyYes it does Joe, having a working Cascade system on a truck is sure better than having to wait to fill the bottels at the firehouse, that's for sure... Glad everyone was ok, tell the laddies, "job well done"...

On the article Fire in West Keansburg Home Draws Large Response From Bayshore Fire Departments [Video]

ReplyJust a couple of questions here... Why didn't the other two fire companies in Keansburg respond for mutual aid? Are the "North Centerville", Union Beach, Middletown & Matawan fire companies closer than "New Point Comfort and Keansburg Fire Company #1? Perhaps Matawan serves as the "FAST" or "RIT" team for West Keansburg Fire Company? Just seems like the mutual aid companies came from quite a distance? I am very new to the area but that just seems strange. Does anyone know why the "other" two fire companies in Keansburg were not called for mutual aid? Is it politics? Just curious in case god forbid, I have a fire at my home will I need to wait for fire companies from many miles away to come to the rescue because of "politics"?

I was awake this morning when I saw several police cars "flying" down my very narrow street in Keansburg (I thought there was a fire or something terrible had happened). If anyone had been out on that street there would have been a major accident for sure... I thought in the state of New Jersey motor vehicle "chases" were to be called off when these types of speed are involved unless the driver was known to have committed some sort or "major offense"? I mean I am all in favor of catching someone who is suspected of breaking the law but 9 different police departments including the state police? For real? 16 motor vehicle violations including "eluding police" is definitely bad but would it really have been worth it if she or a police officer had injured or even killed someone? I realize this did not happen and she is now where she belongs "in jail" but come on, whoever decided to allow this should be reprimanded at a minimum or something. Anyway, "just me asking"...

bths06, this is not a "witch hunt" for any particular commissioner or two or three who receive these "benefits". What I am simply stating is that the benefits should NOT be offered. If these "perks", "stipends", "benefits" whatever you would like to call them are not available then no one would take them. As a taxpayer you have the right to speak up regarding how your taxes are spent. Go to these commissioner meetings, they are open to the public and the public has an opportunity to speak and question anything these commissioners receive and what they spend your hard earned money on. I have attended many of these meetings and spoke up during the "comments from the public" portion of the meeting. One person stating their opinion falls on deaf ears. If more people spoke out things would change but most people just complain to friends, family etc. Until ordinances are proposed and ultimately voted on nothing will change. Well there will be changes when this towns fire services go paid, which is right around the corner

So Lori, not quite sure I understand your point. What does "certifications" have to do with a commissioner receiving benefits they are not entitled to? My status as a volunteer is irrelevant. The facts I have stated are quite true. There are current sitting commissioners who are NOT full time employees of the township who receive benefits. As I stated, check the records people. STOP THE WASTEFUL SPENDING. Lori I fully appreciate and support the volunteers and what they do but you will be taxed right out of this town soon. Oh and FYI, paid firefighters are right around the corner for Brick, closer than you think. Have a great day people and HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!

They meet ONCE a month, any other unpublished meetings would be against the law (sunshine law). They DO receive in the neighborhood of $5000. An attorney present is NOT required (many districts do not have an attorney present for every meeting) Some fire commissioners in this town DO receive health benefits, check the records people. Administration and Professional fees are way out of line (check your local fire budget line by line and see for yourselves). And YES hydrant rates are totally out of line as well. I know my facts quite well Jcb. Let these elected officials serve the people instead of the people serving them. VOLUNTEER like the firefighters do. ENOUGH of wasteful spending!

ReplyHere Here! Now, let this roll down to the Fire Department commissioners as well, they meet once a month for maybe an hour and they also receive a "stipend" which I believe is in the $5000 range plus health benefits if they choose to take them. Also, the fire districts pay to have an attorney present at their commissioner meetings even if nothing important is being voted on. Talk about a waste of tax payers money. Take a look at the line item on the budget for professional services (attorney, accounting, etc.) it’s just plain ludicrous. Let’s real in this ridiculous spending. If you want to volunteer as a fire commissioner then volunteer like the fire fighters do.

I really can't believe you people, we all want updates regarding this horrific tragedy but blaming the "Patch" for not reporting news that is not there is ludicrous. Every news station is saying the same thing, " the investigation is ongoing and there is nothing new to report at this time. From what i understand the Atlantic County Prosecutor is handling the investigation and that particular prosecutor is very "tight lipped" when it comes to ongoing or open cases.
I am quite sure there will be an update sometime soon. Something like this cannot just be “swept under the table”. Let us all continue to keep both of these families in our thoughts and prayers. Slinging accusations and assumptions is tasteless and just downright rude to this little boys family.
